MPI - Kansas City Chapter

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
##SHARELINKS##

You pay $325-$450 per year in annual dues. The chapter gets back up to 25% of that or $81.25 - $112.50 per member.

Of that 25% listed above the chapter must use:

  • 25% for MPIs proprietary speaker database (one speaker per year per chapter)
  • 25% for the chapter to pay speaker fees and travel
  • 50% MPI Headquartersuarter holds this money and allows the chapter to use it for speaker fees and speaker travel upon their approval
  • Our chapter typically receives at least 75% of our speaker fees complimentary from local speaker bureau, speaker members, and friends. In 2010-2011 this equaled about $50,000 in-kind donations given to our chapter.

This means that ZERO ($0) of your money comes back to the chapter for normal operating expenses, which includes:

  • Chapter administrator
  • Chapter phone, fax and internet for daily operations
  • Website management
  • Strategic Alliance Database
  • Costs of food, beverage, and audio visual at KCMPI educational and social programs
  • Scholarships
  • Chapter leadership to attend the World Education Conference (WEC)
  • Accountant for tax filings
  • Marketing and mailing
  • Recognition for volunteers
  • Student events
  • Insurance
  • The cost for these items alone is about $200,000.

What does pay for these items?

  • The fee for monthly education and networking events
  • Cash sponsorships
  • Exhibitor fees at the Professional Education Conference (PEC)
  • Annual auction
  • Other fundraising opportunities such as Chief’s tickets
  • 50/50 raffle at events
  • Website, newsletter and member directory advertising
  • In-kind donations

How can you help the chapter to be fiscally responsible?

  • Attend as many monthly programs as your schedule will allow. Doing so generates funds for the chapter and provides great education and networking for you.
  • Encourage your company to give a cash sponsorship for a monthly program. You can sponsor a location, food, bar, speaker, marketing and handout materials. Options are endless.
  • Encourage your company to exhibit at the annual Professional Education Conference, which this year is on May 16.
  • Purchase an advertisement on KCMPI website.  Get in now while the prices are low, we have a new site launching this year.
  • Advertise in our bi-monthly newsletter or annual membership directory.
  • Participate in auctions and fundraiser events .

Note that the budget numbers listed above include in-kind donations.

It is all of our responsibility to support the chapter’s fiscal needs. The Board of Directors understands the challenges we are all going through and encourages you to participate at any and all levels that you are able. Our membership is open to work with you on what you can give to the chapter via volunteering, in-kind donations or cash sponsorships.

Please reach out to me if you have an interesting idea to raise funds for the chapter.

In hospitality,

Shana Hoy, CMP

If you’re one of those individuals who dread the idea of booking entertainment, and you didn’t attend KCMPI’s March education program, then boy, did you miss out!

On Tuesday, March 27, KCMPI members gathered at the historic Uptown Theater to learn the ins-and- outs of planning, booking, and working with entertainment at meetings and tradeshows. Although there was plenty of education, it wasn’t all business... lots of fun was lined up too! Participants were entertained by former Seinfeld writer and standup comedian Keith Barany, wowed by the lovely ladies of KC’s Burlesque Underground, had their minds messed with by magician and mentalist Devin Henderson, and rocked out during social hour with The Magnetics.

Emcee and moderator Dennis Dupont lead a panel of experts in a comprehensive discussion about engaging speakers and performers from the perspectives of an agent, meeting planner, speakers bureau, and the venue itself.  This interactive panel was a great way to learn the best approaches to booking and working with entertainers!

A very special thank you to our generous sponsors, entertainers, and our host venue, The Uptown Theater. Without their support, the evening wouldn’t have been possible.

Yes, that’s a mouthful but what better way to develop successful business relationships than to learn effective communication skills? As Debra said, every business meeting and conference can turn into an opportunity for success just by incorporating graceful conversation musts and compelling business networking techniques. Of course, we also learned that effective communication also means active listening!

By listening to our membership this year, KCMPI was able to offer this outstanding educational program coupled with one of the nation’s most dynamic speakers. Debra Fine is a former engineer who regularly holds program for Fortune 500 firms that include General Electric, American Bar Association, Cisco Systems, Comerica Banks and Google.   Her best-selling book The Fine Art of Small Talk, was published with excellent reviews and feature stories in USA Today, Entrepreneur Magazine and The Chicago Tribune. Her recent media appearances include the Today Show, the Early Show, CNN and NPR Morning Edition.

In addition, since KCMPI is committed to bringing sexy back: new, fun, hip, fresh and relevant ideas, events and connections, there was no better place to hold The Fine Art of Small Talk than the sexy and new One 8 Oak Event Space. Surrounded by gorgeous red brick and thick wooden beams, and using state-of-the-art audio visual, Matthew Davis and Taste Catering provided a dynamite atmosphere with delicious cocktails and appetizers. Matthew and company are also the owners of The Terrace on Grand, another impossibly hip and popular event space in Kansas City, Missouri.

Many thanks to all of our excellent sponsors – One 8 Oak, Taste Catering, AGENDA: USA, Aloft Hotel Leawood, and Silpada. All helped make this evening of learning and laughter such a resounding success. In fact, KCMPI’s very own Lynne Fleenor donated the delectable desserts. If you haven’t tasted Lynne’s Cake Pops, you are missing a sweet treat!

Besides being another social media tool that eats away at your time (I think we all fall into the trap now and then!), recent studies show it can also become an effective tool for businesses and associations. The question "Why is KCMPI important to me" made me think back to when I joined.  I had a friend who was a Meeting Planner who I worked very closely with.  She was a KCMPI member and suggested I join.  Because I trusted her I did join and immediately met some really nice and friendly people, many who from this networking have become valued clients.  I also right away was caught by B Waldo and asked to join her Awards Banquet committee. I’ve never met anyone yet who can turn B down, so I joined.  It was such a pleasure to work on that committee with many experienced planners and suppliers.  I really learned a lot, enough that I was asked to be the Chair of this committee the next year.

So, why Is KCMPI important to me?  Because it allows me to grow, to learn from others more experienced than me, and to have fun with them.  From this committee I went on to serve on the Board of Directors for 3 years.  The networking and connecting have been invaluable.  I’ve been able to meet and become friends with several members who have become my clients.  Some have referred me to others in different industries who have also become clients.

So yes, I joined hoping to bring in some new business.  This did happen, but the best part of joining was making life-long friends.  These are people who really care for you, will help you, and give you a smile and a pat on the back when you need that.  This is what makes being a member important to me, the People!  I hope I can give you a smile and a pat on the back sometime soon.

Patti Gaughan, CMP is celebrating her twentieth year of membership with KCMPI and continues to show her dedication to the chapter. The Board of Directors voted Patti Leader of the Third Quarter.

Jill Quinn, VP of Finance, said, "Patti lead the Audit Committee this year and did a wonderful job. She provided a thorough report which the Board of Directors used to guide the planning of next year’s budget. Thank you, Patti, for your fantastic leadership and commitment to KCMPI!"

Many KCMPI committees have benefited from Patti’s leadership over the years including Website, Awards, Marketing, Programs and Education. While Patti was the CMP Study Session Leader, she guided our members as they prepared for the CMP exam.  Since 1999, Patti has been awared the WEC Scholarship, Planner of the Year Award, President’s Award and Event and Program of the Year Award.

Throughout Patti’s twenty years with KCMPI she has worked as an independent planner. She credits much of her success to her KCMPI involvement, "being an active member in the chapter gave me a place to establish and build a reputation and referral base. Being a volunteer gives me managerial and other work experiences that I would not have achieved through my jobs."

We are proud to have Patti Gaughan as an active member of our organization and thrilled that she has earned the Leader of the Quarter award.
