REALTOR NEWS
REALTORS from across New York State will travel to Albany
today to show their support for an extension of the state’s successful property
tax cap, which has helped make homeownership more affordable for both new and
long-time New York homeowners. Senate
Majority Leader John Flanagan will also speak during the event, which begins 9
a.m. in Meeting Room 6 at the Empire State Plaza.
Additionally, REALTORS will be discussing other key issues including: a
proposed tax credit for the installation of a residential sprinkler system; the
codification of real estate teams in New York’s Real Property Law; greater
transparency in the cooperative apartment buying process; first-time homebuyer
programs; and opposition to all increases in real estate transfer taxes. Learn
more here. Also, don’t forget to include the hashtag #NYSARLobbyDay when posting
photos and comments on social media! You can also follow NYSAR Government Affairs on Twitter.
The recent May Jobs Report showed employers added 280,000
jobs last month, which hints that there will be no slowdown in job growth
anytime soon. REALTOR.com Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke said this was a good
affirmation that indeed the economy is back on a positive track and that it is
also very positive for housing.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a report on Wednesday, June 3,
detailing savings to taxpayers as a result of the state’s property tax cap,
which was passed in 2011. The report analyzes the first three years that the
cap was in effect. It concludes that the typical property tax payer saved more
than $800 during those first three years and projects a savings of $2,100 in
local property taxes by 2017.
NYSAR played a pivotal role in establishing a
property tax cap and continues to support tax relief for property owners.
Additional data, including estimated cumulative savings by county, can be found here.
On
Wednesday, June 3, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced
that it would be "sensitive" to companies that make a good-faith effort to
comply with the new Truth in Lending Act and Real Estate Settlement Procedures
Act Integrated Disclosure (TRID) regulation that goes into effect on August 1,
2015. The announcement by CFPB is a net win but less than what some members of
Congress requested, which was a hard deadline, five-month testing or "grace"
period.
