CALENDAR OF EVENTS
NEWS

The Texas State Council Board would like to make you aware of some issues that are developing between the SHRM Board of Directors and a group of SHRM members who call themselves the SHRM Members for Transparency ("Transparency Group").

The Texas State Council is not endorsing one group over another, but we want to make all SHRM members aware of the situation. As a SHRM member, each individual can choose a personal way to respond based on their opinion of the issues.

The Transparency Group is concerned about several decisions the SHRM Board has made in regard to operations and expenditures of the Society. Included below are two links that provide information regarding the issues in question. One is a link to the Transparency Group website. The other is a link to the response SHRM has made to the concerns of the Transparency Group. If you have questions regarding the information provided there are individuals you can contact from both sides. You can also email the TSC directly, and we will try to provide you with any additional information you request. texasshrm@gmail.com

DallasHR is excited to kick off a new year under the leadership of our President, Dr. Sandra Reid and our HRSouthwest Conference Director, Sandi Denton. Our leadership has chosen some inspiring and motivating themes for the year.

DallasHR's theme will be "Nourishing Talent" in recognition of the role that HR professionals play in recruiting and retaining our human capital and inspiring their best performance for our clients and customers.

The theme for our conference this year will be "HR Training Camp." Again, this is a nod to the important role development plays not only for our employees, but also for our profession.

We are excited to continue to offer educational sessions that address some of those development needs and encourage everyone to check out what is being offered on our website, http://www.dallashr.org/. Best wishes to all as we all continue to advance the HR profession!

In our March 2011 monthly newsletter we mistakenly listed the Brazos Valley chapter as the Central Texas chapter. We apologize for the mistake.

If you chapter has some great news to share in Chapter Chatter please pass it along to us! The deadline for submission is the 20th of each month.

DIVERSITY

SHRM has formed a Committee to develop credible Diversity and Inclusion Standards that will meet the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) guidelines. This is about a year and half process, that once completed will be available to all Human Resource professional at no cost. There is a briefing posted on the TSC website to answer questions that you may have such as:

· Why is SHRM doing this?
· How are the ANSI standards being done?
· What is this "Standards" thing and why should I care?
· Who is involved in developing the standards?
· What are the Steps in developing this standard?

All of the answers are available in the presentation on the SHRM Texas State Council website by clicking on "Committee" and then opening the Diversity section. Please direct any questions to the SHRM TSC Diversity Director.

Women’s History Month – The evolution of a month to honor women began on March 8, 1857, when garment workers in New York staged one of the first organized protests by working women. Women’s groups internationally have designated times to mark this day. In an effort to begin adding women’s history into educational curricula, a Women’s History week was initiated in 1978. By 1981, the week was a national event, and in 1987, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to include all of March as a celebration for women.

MEMBERSHIP

Did you know there is a membership recruitment and retention toolkit under the Volunteer Resources section of SHRM’s website?

It is a 34-page document that is full of helpful information including templates for letters. According to at-large SHRM members, the top 5 reasons "HR PROFESSIONALS DON’T JOIN CHAPTERS" because...

1. I didn’t know there was a local chapter.

2. No one invited me to join.

3. The chapter’s bylaws prohibit me from becoming a member, even though I am a SHRM member.

4. I attended a chapter meeting and did not feel welcomed.

5. No one responded to my email/phone calls for membership information.

Share this with your membership committee and come up with an action item for at least 3 of the 5. It’s time to market your chapter in your community!

It’s time to ask these at-large members to join! You can get a mailing list of these at-large members. If your chapter needs help, please contact Jennifer Rower at 210-638-5012 or jrower@woodcharter.com
