The February AHRMA Volunteer of the Month award was presented to John Steele, SPHR, Executive Director of the Texas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. John is an active member of AHRMA’s Workforce Readiness Committee, and in collaboration with several of his colleagues and the SHRM Texas State Council, has put together a program called the "Patriotic Promise" that is being presented all over Texas (and will be coming to an AHRMA event soon – stay tuned for more information). The "Patriotic Promise" is designed to help local businesses with their veterans recruitment initiatives.
John has been working with AHRMA to help us educate HR professionals on how to translate military experience to the KSAs meaningful to the civilian workforce in an effort to help put our military veterans to meaningful work, while improving the workforce at the same time. John’s work has such a broad reach, and we want him to know how much we appreciate his efforts, his support and his assistance. Thanks John! In February the BAHRMA (Bay Area Houston) chapter completed a government affairs project in partnership with SHRM. Our members, and even some of their staff members, helped us by writing letters to Texas Senators and our local Congress Representative focused on keeping the current pre-tax retirement savings plans. On March 8th, at our annual conference, BAHRMA will be conducting a Dress for Success "SOS" suit drive that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women, and helps them thrive in work and in life.
Hiring is ramping up in many areas across the country, but especially here is Texas. Texas CEO Magazine reports CEO’s in the state expect an increase in revenue this year (77%), expect an increase in profits (60%), and plan to hire in the next 12 months (65%). These results were based on a study by Vistage International in the fourth quarter of 2011.
This hiring trend has resulted in a sharp increase in the number of companies adding to their internal recruiting teams, says Diana Meisenhelter, President of the Dallas/Fort Worth Staffing Management Association, a SHRM special interest chapter. "Good recruiters are in high demand," says Meisenhelter, "and companies need to make sure they keep their talent acquisition teams staffed and well trained. In many areas – healthcare, IT, energy – finding staff for critical openings is as hard as it has ever been. Even though unemployment is still elevated, the skills of the available workforce don’t always match the needs companies have." The DFW SMA is offering a variety of luncheons and other events in 2012 designed to keep talent acquisition professionals educated and well networked. Among the programs slated for 2012 is a joint fall program with the DFW Texas Recruiters Network designed to recognize the top recruiting team in Dallas/Fort Worth. DallasHR enjoys a SOLD OUT meeting in February!
DallasHR enjoyed seeing a SOLD OUT crowd for the February 2012 lunch meeting. The Success and Servant Leadership topic was presented by Chris Willis and Henry Rogers at Interstate Batteries. DallasHR Staff put a personal touch on the meeting by making small bags of candy and placing them on the table for each member and guest at the meeting. They were a great way to say, "Thank you," and 'You are special to us!" We look forward to another big crowd in March when Margo Parker presents Developing a Strategic Leadership Team! Way to go DallasHR! DallasHR Workforce Readiness supports the ESGR event! DallasHR Workforce Readiness committee is busy working on the upcoming Job Fair and Job Workshops February 29, at the Joint Naval Base in Fort Worth (formerly Carswell Air Force Base). The event is sponsored by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) and we are working again with Gary Owens, Regional Program Manager. Committee members will make four presentations to service personnel on workforce readiness. At this event, the ESGR has requested we present one topic at four different times to ensure we are able to interface with as many service members as possible. The topic will be Resume Preparation, Key Words for Electronic Submission, and the use of Social Media. DallasHR Community Relations team is working with LaunchAbility! The Community Relations committee has teamed up with Launchability for FUNFEST 2012! The 20 DallasHR volunteers will host games, activity stations, serve food and refreshments for attendees. Our team will be collecting Easter eggs, soft candy (jelly beans and Starburst), and small gift bags at our next membership meeting. The event is scheduled for April 5. Drs. Jennie Johnson (Management and Marketing) and Cody Cox (Behavioral Sciences) at the University of Texas at Brownsville recently collaborated on an original research project entitled, Identifying KSAs Important for Managerial Success in the Rio Grande Valley, which they presented at the Academy of Management’s annual conference, held in San Antonio in 2011.
Drs. Johnson and Cox garnered high praise during the conference, receiving the Management Education and Development (MED) Global Forum Best Symposium Award. The award is traditionally awarded to scholars who have developed a symposium that best creates the opportunity to address global issues of significance to management education and/or development. Dr. Johnson is a SHRM member at the national and local levels and the College Relations Director for the Lower Rio Grande Valley Society for Human Resource Management Chapter #313. Data for the study were collected from chapter members and business owners in the area. Mid-Cities HR Association, along with area SHRM chapters DFW SMA, Fort Worth HRMA and North Texas SHRM, conducted the Fifth Annual Employment Law Symposium on January 25.
This year’s event was attended by 140 HR professionals and attorneys in the DFW area. The Symposium was held at the Cacharel Restaurant and Grand Ballroom in Arlington. This year’s Symposium was titled, "Beginning 2012 – Preventive Measures to Guide Employers through Economic Times and an Increasingly Complex Legal Environment." Attorneys from the national employment law firm Jackson Lewis LLP provided updated information on the NLRB, healthcare reform, risks of social media in the workplace, protection of business information and other relevant topics. This all-day educational event ended with networking, hors d’oeuvres and a cocktail reception. This year’s event was a success with the support of the sponsors for this year’s Symposium - Imperative Information Group, WorkSTEPS ,The University of Texas Arlington and Liberty Mutual. A portion of the proceeds from the Law Symposium were donated to the SHRM Foundation. Plans are already underway for the Sixth Annual Employment Law Symposium. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, January 23, 2013! Rev-Up Your HR Engine at the 8th Annual South Texas HR Symposium (STXHRS), the leading educational event for Human Resource Professionals in Central and South Texas. The symposium will provide a broad scope of important topics for current and future leaders.

The vision of the Society for Human Resource Management Texas State Council (SHRM-TSC) is to be the voice of the HR professional throughout Texas in matters relating to business, legislative issues and professional development. Both the national organization and the SHRM-TSC work to provide information to our members about important legislative issues that impact our profession and educate lawmakers about the impact of the legislation they propose on employees and businesses. We go a step further, though, by helping to educate our members about how they can get involved as well.
Most lawmakers know very little about what a typical HR professional deals with on a day-to-day basis. Only two of the current 535 members of Congress have an HR background, and the numbers are similar at the state level. They simply don't have the experience to know that a bill that may sound like a good idea on the surface can have a lot of unintended negative consequences. SHRM members are the HR experts, and we need to speak up to help shape legislation before bad laws are passed. Another important reason for our members to become involved is that lawmakers want to hear from their constituents—the people who can vote for or against them—much more than they want to hear from lobbyists. Legislators work for their constituents, and they want and need to hear real life stories about why a proposed bill may or may not work. In short, lawmakers are most influenced by interaction with and information from constituents when making decisions. For these reasons, the SHRM-TSC wants to help our members find their own voices so they can become more involved in legislative issues that impact the workplace. One of the services SHRM-TSC offers to our chapters is the Legislative Action Roadshow. This program provides step-by-step instructions that will take the mystery out of the legislative process and how we can impact it. The program begins with the most basic information, such as determining who your elected officials are, then it provides a look at the best resources for researching pending legislation and how to stay updated as pending bills move through the process. There are interactive sections where participants learn how to call, write or conduct a meeting with elected officials, as well as what to expect during a visit and how to follow up. The program is fun and informal, and it provides role playing exercises to help members become comfortable expressing their views on important issues. Each attendee will leave with a handbook of written instructions they can keep and use as they begin putting the lessons they learned into practice. The program is approved for certification credits. A team of experienced volunteers conducts the Roadshow, and will share their own personal experiences to let members know how easy it is to get involved and make a difference. To learn more about bringing the Roadshow to your chapter, contact Dena Culpepper at denaculpepper@att.net or 214-354-8740. HR CERTIFICATION INSTITUTE
