The Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce announces the 3rd Annual CONNECT Business & Career Forum, to be held November 8, 2012, in Austin, Texas. Complete details will be released soon at: www.austinasianchamber.org

The Connect Career Forum unites Asian American and minority job seekers with recruiters at government agencies and companies. Asian Americans are about 7 percent of Austin's population- and the Connect Forum attracts diverse participants from around Texas!  At the same time, the Connect Business Forum brings together small, minority and women-owned businesses with large corporations and government entities seeking to increase supplier diversity. The unique format helps candidates be their best - so you can quickly learn about their background and experience, while sharing your own organization values and hiring needs.

The event is launched with a 15-minute motivational speech that challenges listeners to articulate the things most valuable to recruiters. Practical workshops targeted to new and experienced hires put them at ease by answering their most urgent questions. Intimate 20-minute roundtable discussions follow. You'll meet 6 to 7 candidates per round. You'll conclude the day with a relaxing VIP Reception that brings together community leaders, government, Chief Diversity Officers and hiring and supplier diversity leaders.

"[In] our organization, capacity building, trust building, are most important. I continued months later to get a handful of referrals from attendees... The seeds are sown at the Connect Forum. One mother contacted me months later... she made it a point that her son tracked with the timeline we had to take applications for interns." -Juanita Baldwin, PHR, Recruitment, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality

"My presidential term challenge is to think about the legacy you leave behind. The Connect Forum blended format is really beneficial to build community and trust." Lori Rohre, SPHR, President, Austin Human Resource Management Association (AHRMA)

"The Greater Austin Asian Chamber is committed to building a strong workforce. With the Connect Forum, our partners and corporate sponsors build a robust pipeline. Working together, we increase Austin's competitiveness in the wider marketplace." - David Pena, President, Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce.

In July 2012, the Bay Area Human Resource Management Association (BAHRMA) held  a community outreach to give care packages to the military in Afghanistan. At our June ESGR support meeting, we collected donations from members with BAHRMA promising to match the total donation amount. The total amount collected, was $334.00!   With that money, a variety of goodies were purchased ranging from snacks to playing cards and dominos. These items were sent to a troop overseas and the feedback from the troop was unbelievable. They said "Just want to thank you for the latest Care Package..."OMG it was like Disneyland in a Box"! When I opened it, me and the guys just stood around it for a second staring at it's contents like we found a Unicorn inside! That was AWESOME!!!! :) We just want to send you a "Big HOOAH" on behalf of 2nd Platoon, 721 En Co, PASAB Afghanistan!!!!".

BAHRMA is proud to support our military through to SOS signing support for our veterans and the men and woman who are actively fighting for our country.

Many times basic things seem to slip by us in our busy and hectic days in the HR world. Being heavily involved in working with our Student Chapters of SHRM we have come to realize that paying for a higher education is a "big" deal to the working and non-working students. At the University level many of our students are working adults seeking to improve their status at the job while preparing themselves for that next position or even that next promotion. As our society moves into the new "knowledge" industry it will be imperative for our employees, as well as, those new applicants to be as educated as possible to meet the challenges ahead, and furthering their education is a major step in that direction.

Unfortunately, not only does it take the precious commodity of time from these working adults but it takes money. So whenever we, as professionals in HR, can do to help these folks attain their goals of expanding their educational knowledge we should take that opportunity. We need to provide these folks with as much information and programs as we can to assist them. One way is through Grants and Scholarships made available by various institutions, like SHRM. Therefore, we wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of some Scholarship opportunities available through SHRM that could assist one of your own chapter members.

The SHRM Foundation’s Student Scholarship program is pleased to announce that applications are now available online August 1 – November 1. More than $50,000 will be awarded this year to active SHRM student members studying and excelling in a Human Resources or related program. The following 40 scholarships will be awarded: · 10 Undergraduate Education Awards of $2,500 each · 1 Lisa Burke Award (undergraduates) of $2,500 · 4 Graduate Education Awards of $5,000 each · 25 Awards for the Assurance of Learning Assessment of $200 each Eligible students may apply online or view additional information here:

SHRM FOUNDATION

Donations from chapter and state council leaders are a strong demonstration of our leaders' commitment to the SHRM Foundation's charitable mission. As outlined in the SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence (SHAPE) planning workbooks, your chapter or state council must conduct a Leadership Campaign in order to qualify for a Gold Award or Platinum Award.

To qualify for a Gold Award, you must encourage your board members to make a minimum individual donation of $25 each with a goal of 100% participation. To qualify for a Platinum Award, you must achieve 100% participation of board members making a minimum donation of $25 each. The SHRM Foundation prefers that individual donations of less than $25 per person be combined into one SHRM chapter or state council donation. When the chapter or state council makes a donation for board members, keep records of donations made, along with the individual’s names.

MyMatters

In an effort to keep our members informed, we wanted to make you aware of an alternate slate of write-in candidates being proposed by the SHRM Members for Transparency, a group of SHRM leaders who oppose some of the changes instituted by the current SHRM Board of Directors. The "Position Paper" for this group, as well as the identity of the alternate slate of candidates, can be found on their website: www.shrmmembersfortransparency.com

The SHRM-Texas State Council  is not endorsing either slate of candidates, but we are encouraging our membership to read the information presented by both groups and make an informed decision when voting. Your vote is very important to the organization. Thanks
