CHAPTER CHATTER

We hope all the chapters are enjoying their summer and the wonderful Texas heat we all love! We would like to take a minute to highlight some exciting things that are happening in Arlington with the Mid-Cities Human Resource Association.

The April MCHRA meeting featured a Wine Pull, which raised $800 for the SHRM Foundation!

MCHRA recently teamed with University of Texas at Arlington to create and execute a survey of our membership. We had an impressive 81% of active members responding! We coupled the response rate with an incentive to win a iPad mini, which was awarded to Shelly Stone, PHR with Atmos Energy Corporation.

The results of the survey showed that there is an interest for more emphasis on Texas HR law. Beginning with the May meeting, MCHRA has added an additional legal hour for monthly luncheons. With the new legal hour, there is not an additional cost to registered attendees for the second presentation. The legal hour will also be submitted for HRCI credits.

In June, MCHRA teamed up with the Dallas-Fort Worth Healthcare Human Resources Association (DFWHHRA) and had three speakers and 3.5 recertification credits. MCHRA is looking to continue these for the remaining meetings for 2014.

In an attempt to reach more members and increase the interest in MCHRA, we have ramped up our social media efforts. In June, we added a Facebook group and Twitter account to widen communications with our members. We have seen a wonderful increase in participation and requests to join.

Additionally, we are in the midst of reconstructing the current website to provide more information about our chapter, membership, volunteer opportunities, and add a public job board that we hope will attract local employers to share their jobs with us! We just finished up a membership campaign to reach out to those with a lapsed membership and encourage renewal. We took a personal approach and made calls to each person and sent personalized emails.

Typically we take July off, however, this year we have decided to host a mix and mingle event for all! This will be a fun event, with prizes, food, drink, and most importantly an effort to showcase our leadership, membership benefits, and volunteer opportunities!!

As you can see there is a lot going on in Arlington!  Stop by for a visit we'd love to have ya!

In June, DallasHR  hosted a 75th anniversary celebration, recognizing the milestone year with special appearances by past presidents and a look back at the organization and the HR profession through the decades.

In addition, the DallsHR Workforce Readiness Committee continues its work with The Senior Source to provide interviewing skills and resume support to their clients looking for employment, helping an impressive 50 – 70 seniors each month. And DallasHR is excited to be a part of this impactful initiative.

Just how is this work changing lives? Claire Turner, director of the senior employment program for The Senior Source, shares her feedback in a note to the volunteer group:

"Good morning, All:

I want to express our highest praise for the fabulous work you did here at The Senior Source yesterday.  Wow – what an incredible turnout of 9 of you, and we’re so appreciative and honored that you all would give so much of your time to our older job seekers!

To many of you, I may sound like a broken record, but as in the past, ALL of our clients/attendees enthusiastically shared what a tremendous experience yesterday morning was for them. We received several evaluations that stated your interaction, guidance and feedback were invaluable!  Many also said you helped them without being judgmental. Lastly, yesterday, as always when DallasHR is here, our clients left here with a new spring in their step, smiles on their faces and renewed confidence from the tips they learned from your individual sessions. Even the most quiet of these were smiling.

So there you have it, you all are THE BEST! We are eternally grateful for your generosity of time yesterday and in the future, as well. Our wonderful seniors appreciate and need you, and we on staff at The Senior Source do cartwheels when we have DallasHR on our agenda for the day."

Diversity Models: What’s Working, What’s Not - Join us for a live and informative panel discussion about diversity models that work by considering some specific measures of success: recruit, reward, recognize, and retain. These are important concepts in building a diverse workforce, because if you omit any one of them you will substantially decrease your likelihood of success. In other words, it is not enough to just recruit. If you cannot retain minority candidates in your workforce, then the recruiting cycle is nothing more than a revolving door and it yields no net gain.

Organizations must have someone at the top who truly believes that building diversity is the right thing to do, and then see to it that it happens. Leaders must marshal the forces to make change and be consistent in their demand for change to take place. It cannot be an "on again, off again" program, but one of sustained advocacy. In other words, if there is no incentive to change, then change is unlikely to happen.?

Explore how to take your leadership to the next level for better execution?
Define your current diversity model?
Prepare for conversations that will facilitate change?
Activate execution with immediate next steps that will deliver results
