ACC Members' Update

The ACC's 2015 Tomorrow's Leadership Council recently developed a "Coal Communications Kit" to help coal advocates educate, inform, build bridges, and counter misinformation about coal. This document provides ideas and information that coal industry employees and others can use to improve communications and relations with others in the public realm.

Whether you're on an airplane, at a business or community event, or seeking to inform relatives and firends, coal advocates now have useful facts and information to assist them in communicating the importance, value, and benefits of coal in U.S. energy production.

The Coal Communication Kit provides ready responses to commonly held negative notions about coal. It offers convenient "elevator speeches", Facebook posts, and Tweets, as well as more detailed information and resources.

We’re confident coal advocates will find this information useful and easy to share. Be sure to check out the Coal Communications Kit, use it in your discussions with friends, the media, elected officials, and others. Then, please be sure to share the Coal Communications Kit on your social media accounts. Spread the information around so everyone can access it!

We’re repeating last month’s note on the DOI Federal Coal Program hearings as there are still meetings being held in June.

As the next step in the Department of the Interior’s review of the federal coal program, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is holding a series of public meetings to solicit public input.  These meetings will provide the public with opportunities to help the BLM identify and evaluate potential reforms to the federal coal program. This announcement follows the previous publication of a Notice of Intent to conduct a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) that began a formal, comprehensive review of the federal coal program. ...

Each public scoping meeting is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. local time in the following locations:

The meetings in Seattle and Pittsburgh will be live-streamed at www.blm.gov/live, and all meetings will have a listen-only audio link via telephone. Those who attend the meetings in person and who wish to speak will be asked to sign-in.  Speakers will be called upon on a first-come, first-served basis and will be accommodated to the fullest extent possible given the space and time available.  Those interested in attending should check the BLM Coal PEIS website prior to the meeting for additional information.

The Interior Department will release an interim report on the PEIS by the end of 2016. The interim report will contain a summary of substantive comments received during the public scoping period and conclusions from the scoping process about potential planning alternatives results. The comprehensive review is expected to take approximately three years to complete.

Two recent papers by paper by Dr. David W. Kreutzer and his colleagues present information for climate policy consideration and response. One paper discusses climate science aspects, which is both important and relevant to policymakers, industry, and the public as measures to address carbon emissions are advanced domestically and globally. The other paper focuses on the economic implications of the Paris Protocol.

Join us as Dr. Kreutzer discusses the results of Heritage’s most recent research on these issues. Included will be following: 

• Actual data are not trending to an imminent climate crisis 

• Climate policies would be ineffective even if we were heading to a crisis

• The economic impact of these ineffective policies

• The way forward on energy policy

Now what? That’s the question many are asking after the U.S. Supreme Court rightly decided to put the brakes on President Obama’s so-called "Clean Power Plan."

By placing a stay on implementation of the President’s carbon rule, the Court temporarily removed States from the EPA’s regulatory crosshairs. Unfortunately, the Court’s decision to grant a stay does not mean that these potentially devastating carbon regulations are dead in the water.

Over several months of 2015, the market share of natural gas generation exceeded that of coal-fueled generation as a combination of mild heating season weather and retirement of coal plants nudged natural gas into the lead position toward the end of the year. With coal retirements largely behind, and cheap natural gas ahead, what production levels face the restructured coal markets?
