The CPA reminds members that liquified petroleum gases (LPG) being transported in stationary tanks permanently mounted on trailers are non-compliant with respect to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, 1992 (TDG Act), Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations and the applicable Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards, namely CSA B620 and B622.

British Columbia Minister of Transportation Claire Trevena announced that the government has introduced enhanced chain-up regulations for commercial vehicles that include stricter fines for non-compliance. The Ministry found that the overwhelming majority of closures on the Coquihalla highway last winter were due to either poorly chained trucks or trucks without any chains and hopes that the new regulations will result in safer B.C. highways.

Transport Canada has renewed Equivalency Certificate SU 12435 (Renewal 2). The previous certificate is hereby revoked and superseded by the new one, which is available on the CPA website.

The deadline to become compliant with WHMIS 2015 obligations was December 1, 2018. As of this date, the classification, label and safety data sheet (SDS) must comply fully with the specific legislation and regulation chosen by the supplier, and not a combination of the two.

Effective December 31, 2018, new editions of standards CSA B339, CSA B340, CSA B341 and CSA B342 will be in force. Notwithstanding, members may begin transitioning to these new standards at any time before this date.

Ongoing Consultation & Updates

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) has released the draft of the update to safety standard CSA B625, Portable tanks for the transport of dangerous goods for a 60-day consultation period. Once the safety standard has been finalized and published, a notice will be issued specifying the coming into force date of the updated standard.

Regulations Amending the Energy Efficiency Regulations (2016), aimed at introducing or updating energy standards, testing standards and reporting requirements, were published in Part I of the Canada Gazette on October 20, 2018.
