Early Enrollment for the 2017 Colombia and Morocco IIE partnership programs closes 12/15

IIE’s International Academic Partnership Program is accepting applications for eligible institutions for 2017 partnership programs with Colombia and Morocco. Over the course of the program, institutions participate in a number of training activities focused on implementing and sustaining partnerships with higher education institutions in the focus country, receive guidance from experts in higher education, and participate in a study tour to the focus country. Those who enroll by December 15 will be notified of their participation earlier and begin to receive resources and information about the program prior to the January 16 deadline.

Colombia

Eligibility: Accredited U.S. colleges and universities

Application Period: All applications are due by December 15, 2016

Program Period: January 2017-April 2017

Study Tour: March/April 2017; One week

Greek Diaspora Fellowship Program Selects 21 Diaspora Fellows to Conduct Projects with Greek Universities

IIE is pleased to announce the selection of the inaugural cohort of fellows in The Greek Diaspora Fellowship Program, designed to help avert Greece’s brain drain and develop long-term, mutually-beneficial collaborations between universities in Greece and the United States and Canada. Beginning in January, twenty-one Greek- and Cypriot-born scholars, hailing from a cross-section of sixteen prominent United States and Canadian universities, will travel to Greece to conduct academic projects with their peers at Greek universities, working in areas that range from public health to chemical genomics research, and from English language curriculum to continuing education studies in urban food security. Twelve Greek universities were selected by the Greek Diaspora Fellowship Program to host the fellows for collaborative projects that meet specific needs at their institutions and in their communities, through proposals submitted by faculty members and administrators at the Greek universities. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation funded the program, which is managed by IIE in collaboration with the Fulbright Foundation in Greece.

Craig Barrett, former Intel Chairman and CEO and Distinguished Fulbright Alum, Visits IIE Leaders in DC

Renowned tech industry leader and education philanthropist Craig Barrett (pictured at right) visited IIE’s Washington DC office to speak with IIE Vice Chairman Mark Angelson (left), IIE president and CEO Allan Goodman, and VP Joyce Hendricks about the role of the international education in developing talent to succeed in the global economy. Mr. Barrett learned about the value of international collaboration when he had a Fulbright Fellowship at the Technical University of Denmark in 1972, before joining the Intel Corporation for what would be a 35 year career, leading this important company through the rise of the information technology sector. Continuing his international involvement, he served as a member of the Hong Kong Chief Executive’s Council of International Advisors and co-chaired the Skolkovo Innovation Center in Russia. He serves as president and chairman of BASIS Schools, Inc., a charter school system located in Arizona, Texas, and Washington, DC.

Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies 2017-2019

The Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies (JISP) is financed by the government of Japan and administered by the IMF’s Institute for Capacity Development with assistance from the Institute of International Education (IIE) and International Education Blueprint (IEB) in Japan. JISP’s goal is supporting Japanese scholars during their doctoral studies in macroeconomics and helping them become applied macroeconomists at the IMF. The JISP scholarship grant covers two years of doctoral studies in macroeconomics at universities located outside Japan. JISP covers all reasonable expenses for two years of graduate study including full university tuition, medical insurance, selected travel expenses, annual book allowance, and a monthly stipend. Applications are open to Japanese citizens who are Ph.D. candidates studying at, or applying to a doctoral program in macroeconomics at a university outside of Japan, and who have the ability to obtain a Ph.D. by age 34.

Fulbright International Education Administrators (IEA) seminars help U.S. international education professionals and senior higher education officials create empowering connections with the societal, cultural and higher education systems of other countries. Seminars include campus visits with a cross-section of universities and colleges; briefings with faculty and administrators, government officials, and leading educational experts; and tours of historical and cultural sites. Applications for IEA seminars in France and Germany are currently being accepted. These seminars will take place in October 2017:

•U.S.-France International Education Administrators Program: This two-week seminar is open to senior-level university administrators (such as deans, directors, vice presidents, provosts, and presidents) with substantial responsibility for enhancing the international dimension of their institutions.

•U.S.-Germany International Education Administrators Program: This two-week program is open to administrators involved in one of the following areas: international exchanges (student or faculty exchanges, foreign student admissions and advising, study abroad programs, and international education exchange services), career services, alumni affairs, development or fundraising.

Grants include economy round-trip airfare, travel within the host country, lodging, and a lump sum supplement for incidentals. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and we encourage you to review the complete eligibility criteria, application guidelines, and review criteria on our website.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the annual Victor J. Goldberg IIE Prize for Peace in the Middle East. The prize recognizes outstanding work being conducted jointly by two individuals, one Israeli Jew and one Arab Muslim, whether or not a citizen of Israel, working together to advance the cause of peace in the Middle East. The two individuals whose work is judged to be most successful in bringing people together and breaking down the barriers of hatred will share a $10,000 prize.

To be eligible for the Prize, at least one of the nominated individuals must be an alumna/us of any program administered by IIE, or any exchange program funded by any of IIE's sponsors and administered by another organization. Alumni of the following IIE-administered programs, among others, are encouraged to apply: Fulbright Programs, Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships, International Visitor Leadership Program (formerly International Visitor Program, or IVP), State Department Middle East Partnership Initiative, Ford Foundation International Fellowship Program, Ford Foundation Global Travel and Learning Fund, and training programs funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Fulbright alumni and alumni of the Israel Arab Scholarship Program whose grants were administered by AMIDEAST are also eligible. Similarly, individuals who came to the United States under funding from the Ford Foundation or as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program are eligible even if they were participating in a program coordinated by another organization.

IIE’s Global Experience and Training (GET)™ Joins Forces with ISEP

IIE is excited to announce a collaboration with ISEP on GET™, an IIE initiative which connects international students and young professionals with unique research and internship opportunities offered through IIE’s network of partners in the United States. ISEP, an educational network with more than 300 university members spread across 56 countries, shares a mission well-aligned with IIE’s. Since 1979, ISEP has helped students all over the world overcome financial and academic challenges in order to study abroad.

Through hands-on training in a variety of fields, GET participants create connections and develop distinguished skill sets while working alongside professionals in their fields. IIE is thrilled to collaborate with ISEP and expects that more students will have access to GET opportunities as a result of our joint work. GET will offer five unique opportunities in the U.S. this spring 2017 exploring topics ranging from air quality and pollution management to industrial safety and risk management. GET expects to offer additional opportunities during summer 2017. IIE is proud to have ISEP promote these opportunities among their network of students and institutions across the world.

IIE-SRF Chairman Honored by Rutgers University with First Ever Alumni Leadership Award

IIE-SRF Chairman Mark A. Angelson, a graduate of Rutgers Law School, was honored at this year’s Alumni Association Gala, held on November 9th. Chairman of the Finance and Facilities Committee of the Rutgers University Board of Governors, Mr. Angelson was recognized with the first-ever Alumni Leadership Award. IIE-SRF fellow Jamil Ammar of Syria, a visiting instructor at Rutgers Law School, was featured in a video tribute that was played as an introduction. After receiving a standing ovation, Mr. Angelson spoke at the event, praising Rutgers’ "culture of inclusion and collaboration." IIE-SRF congratulates Mr. Angelson on this well-deserved honor.

IIE Fellowships for Threatened Scholars

The Institute of International Education Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) is now accepting a new round of applications from scholars facing threats to their lives or careers. Fellowships support temporary academic positions at colleges, universities, and other research institutions anywhere in the world where scholars can continue their academic work in safety. Qualifying applicants are currently facing or have recently fled from direct and immediate threats. Preference is given to scholars with a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in their field, and who have extensive teaching or research experience at an institution of higher learning. Women and scholars from under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Students or professionals seeking funding to pursue academic studies or training are not eligible.

IIENetworker Magazine: Virtual Exchange as a Form of Curriculum Internationalization

In the Fall 2016 issue of the IIENetworker magazine, Leslie Bozeman and Yao-Yi Fu of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) discuss that while participation in study abroad is key to preparing students to enter the global workforce, it’s also important to recognize the ways in which universities can provide international opportunities for students who are not well-positioned to study abroad because of financial constraints, work, or other circumstances. "Curriculum internationalization through virtual exchange provides a valuable opportunity for student and faculty development. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I gave thanks for our IIENetwork members, whose active collaboration makes our work possible. Together, we celebrated the 2016 International Education Week with the release of the latest Open Doors data on student mobility. For IIE team members, and for most of you too, every week is about international education and our work is needed now more than ever. IIE remains committed to advancing international education and access to education. Our core values of integrity, global awareness, collaboration, professionalism, excellence, and service, will continue to guide all that we do. Throughout nearly a century of surveying campuses, IIE’s Open Doors Report has documented that U.S. campuses have consistently welcomed international students from all walks of life and locations. Students choose U.S. higher education as an investment in their future because of its high quality and diversity of opportunity, and we believe they will continue to do so.

Across from our headquarters building at United Nations Plaza in New York are the flags of all the member countries of the UN. We work with most of those countries and have family and friends in many. As in our nation, change is a constant in all of them. What doesn’t change is how we work together: with a spirit of compassion, hope and determination. We would like to thank the entire international education community for all that you do, every day, and your steadfast dedication to our shared vision.

Open Doors 2016 Report on International Educational Exchange Released

IIE, together with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, released the latest news on international students in the United States and U.S. students studying abroad in the 2016 Open Doors® Report on International Educational Exchange on November 14. The number of international students at U.S. colleges and universities surpassed one million for the first time during the 2015-16 academic year - an increase of seven percent from the previous year marks a new high, and brings the representation of international learners to a five percent of the total student population at U.S. institutions. Open Doors also reports that more than 313,000 U.S. students received credit last year for study abroad during 2014-15, an increase of nearly three percent over the previous year and an increasing number of U.S. students - over 22,000 in 2014-15 - participated in non-credit work, internships, and volunteering abroad to gain practical skills. The Open Doors findings reflect that students study abroad in part to gain international experience that can be applied in their careers. These findings were the subject of hundreds of news articles in the United States and around the world. IIE and ECA held a briefing and discussion of the new findings at the National Press Club in Washington DC. 2016 IIE Europe Award for Excellence Awarded to DAAD

The Institute of International Education's European Office is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2016 IIE Europe Award for Excellence. This year the award is presented to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to recognize their accomplishments in the internationalization of higher education. DAAD is the independent organization of German higher education institutions and their student bodies, devoted to internationalizing the academic system. The organization serves as an experienced intermediary between university systems and a worldwide network of external partners. As a German institution in Europe, it contributes to shaping the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area, and promotes European interests throughout the world. IIE and DAAD collaborate on a number of projects including STEM Exchange, Best Practices Conferences, joint publications, and emergency student scholarships to assist refugee students from Syria. The German Academic Exchange Service is also a country partner for Generation Study Abroad, a five-year initiative to double the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade.

The Whitaker Program provides funding to emerging U.S.-based leaders in biomedical engineering to conduct a self-designed project overseas. Grant projects – including research, coursework, and public policy work – are intended to enhance both the recipient’s career and the biomedical engineering field with an underlying objective of increasing international collaboration. The Program is looking for candidates who are not only superb scientists, but who can advance the profession by gaining an international perspective. The Institute of International Education’s Council for International Exchange of Scholars (IIE/CIES) is seeking U.S. campuses to host cohorts of junior scholars from the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq.

The intent of this 10-week program is to equip scholars with the knowledge and tools needed to build the capacity of their home institutions and to advance the education of future generations. In addition, it lays the foundation for junior scholars and their U.S. hosts to develop long-term institutional relationships and to identify areas of cooperation that can be sustained beyond the grant period. Participating institutions will enjoy a unique opportunity to establish lasting relationships with faculty members at universities within Iraq and to build upon current efforts to internationalize their campuses and surrounding communities.

CIES seeks two host institutions to implement the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq, which is scheduled to take place June 30, 2017 through September 8, 2017. The University of South Mississippi is sponsoring a study abroad program in Italy, with applications currently open for undergraduate and graduate students. The focus of the program is on human rights of African migrants in Italy and the Italian criminal justice system. Italy is a priority destination for migrants due to Italy’s island of Lampedusa being one of the closest European locations to North Africa. The intersection between migration, human rights, and criminal justice is also prominent throughout the peninsula. Students will have a chance to meet migrants and hear from Italians who focus on their human rights, as well as individuals involved in the justice system. The program will take place in Perugia and in Florence at the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights and a few days in Rome.

USAID SHERA Notice of Funding Opportunity for U.S. - Indonesian Research Partnerships in Science and Technology

On behalf of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and in partnership with the Indonesian Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education (Kemristekdikti), IIE announces a research partnership funding opportunity for the USAID Sustainable Higher Education Research Alliances (USAID SHERA) program to increase research capacity in Indonesia through U.S. – Indonesia partnerships. This program will foster long-term research alliances between top-tier Indonesian higher education institutions, affiliate Indonesian higher education institutions, U.S. higher education institutions, private sector partners, and other stakeholders on critical science and technology topics of local and global significance. USAID SHERA seeks to fund approximately five Centers for Collaborative Research (CCRs) in priority research topics at top-tier Indonesian institutions in partnership with at least one U.S. higher education institution partner and at least three Indonesian higher education institution partners. The anticipated amount of funding per CCR is US$3 million over approximately four years with the lead Indonesian institution as the primary sub-recipient of the funding. Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 for undergraduate students for language-focused study abroad, and Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for graduate students to fund language study, graduate-level research, and academic internships abroad. Now in its fourth year, the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program has helped 239 African-born scholars who have been living and working in North America to connect with their peers at universities throughout Africa. The current proposal submission period runs until December 8, during which time universities in eligible host countries (Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda) can submit a project request for visiting Fellows to come to their universities starting in May 2017. African-born academics residing in the United States or Canada can apply any time, and are matched with accepted projects on a rolling basis. Prospective hosts and fellows can find eligibility requirements and instructions in the "How to Apply" section of the program’s website. The program is designed to build capacity at the host institutions in Africa, and to develop long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships between the universities. Kelty Davis, WeTech Program Officer with IIE, has been a part of Women Enhancing Technology (WeTech), administered by IIE, since its inception in 2015. She has had the chance to witness the positive transformations of women who receive a scholarship and mentorship in the STEM fields, made possible with Qualcomm’s support. Davis traveled to India this summer to take part in the country’s end-of-program celebration, and said the changes in the girls were immediately apparent: "I couldn’t believe that the 18 Scholars I met at orientation in February were the same self-assured young women standing before me. [...] I heard from girls who had recently launched their own start-ups, obtained funding for cutting-edge research studies in their fields that are being published in international journals, [and] garnered competitive internship placements in tech companies such as Google and Intel."

IIE Honors Qualcomm Incorporated and Notable Fulbright Alumni at Annual Gala

At the Institute of International Education's Gala on September 28 at New York’s Pierre Hotel, more than 250 business, education, government, foundation and policy leaders joined IIE to recognize Qualcomm Incorporated for its role in helping women and girls enter and succeed in technology careers, and to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program. The guests also heard a moving testimony from a Syrian student on the critical need to keep students and scholars from countries in crisis in higher education. Qualcomm Chief Executive Officer Steve Mollenkopf accepted IIE’s Opening Minds Corporate Leadership Award on behalf of his company in recognition of its leading role in the Women Enhancing Technology (WeTech) initiative, which IIE launched in 2013.

In celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program, IIE presented seven notable Fulbright Alumni with the IIE Global Changemaker Award to highlight the impact of the individuals and the program throughout its history. The awards recognized alumni who came from or went to Germany, Greece, India, Jordan, Madagascar, Mexico, and New Zealand as students or professors over the seven decades of the program.

Sana Mustafa, a Syrian student who came to the United States to complete her university degree with a scholarship from Bard College through the IIE Syria Consortium for Higher Education in Crisis and received an IIE Emergency Student Fund grant, spoke passionately about the urgent need to help students and scholars who are displaced by violence in their home countries. IIE’s history of providing emergency assistance to students and scholars facing threats and danger spans nearly 100 years.

IIE and Alcoa Foundation Successfully Placing Unemployed Youth in Manufacturing Jobs

Manufacturing Day is an annual national event executed at the local level supported by thousands of manufacturers as they host students, teachers, parents, job seekers and other local community members at open houses, plant tours and presentations designed to showcase modern manufacturing technology and careers. In celebration of Manufacturing Day on October 7, 2016, the Institute of International Education (IIE) and Alcoa Foundation are proud to be supporting a special youth program in which 16-23-year-olds learn valuable job skills and find employment through paid internship programs in manufacturing. Through this program, 500 students in eight communities across the globe received paid internships to find gainful employment, and 73% of those who completed the program are currently employed or enrolled in a workforce training or education program.

The manufacturing industry struggles to find qualified candidates to fill positions while the unemployment figure among youth hovers in the double digits, at 10.4%. The outlook for women is even worse: underrepresentation of women, combined with the real or perceived bias toward men in this industry. IIE and Alcoa Foundation’s Global Internship Program for Unemployed Youth are working to change those statistics. The program is designed to provide youth with paid internship programs to learn both on-the-job skills as well as critical soft skills needed to succeed in a sustainable and rewarding career in manufacturing.

Seeking U.S. Host Campuses for Fulbright Junior Faculty Development Programs

The Institute of International Education’s Council for International Exchange of Scholars (IIE/CIES) is pleased announce the opening of the application process for U.S. campuses to host cohorts of junior scholars from the Fulbright Junior Faculty Development Programs (JFDP) for Egypt, Lebanon, and Tunisia. These programs are designed to equip scholars with the knowledge and tools needed to build the capacity of their home institutions and to advance the education of future generations. In addition, the programs lay the foundation for the junior scholars and their U.S. hosts to develop long-term institutional relationships and to identify areas of cooperation that can be sustained beyond the grant period.

IIE/CIES seeks U.S. institutions to implement the 10-week programs scheduled for July through September 2017 and invites institutions to submit a proposal to host a cohort of scholars in one of the disciplines outlined below for each program. Each cohort will include approximately six scholars.

Jusoor-IIE Partnership Brings 18 Syrian Women to American and Canadian Universities

Eighteen university women from Syria were awarded scholarships to resume their studies through the new "100 Syrian Women, 10,000 Syrian Lives" scholarship program, launched by IIE and the non-profit organization Jusoor. "100 Syrian Women, 10,000 Syrian Lives" was implemented in partnership with Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and with support for educational advising from the EducationUSA network of international student advising centers. The scholarships are expected to bring 100 Syrian women to study at U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities over the next four academic years. IIE and the University of California Davis estimate that between 100,000 and 200,000 Syrian youth are currently displaced from higher education. Pre-war, men and women in Syria attended university in roughly equal numbers. However, Syrian men are three times more likely than women to resume their studies in exile. Selected for their potential to serve as global leaders, the first cohort of students will attend universities including Brown University, Harvard University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, Northeastern University, New York University, Syracuse University, the University of New Mexico, and Valparaiso University. In Canada, participating institutions include Ryerson University, Wilfrid Laurier University, and York University.

Launch of IIE’s Scholarship Program for Syrian Students

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce the IIE Scholarship Program for Syrian Students. This scholarship opportunity will provide Syrian students with the unique opportunity to continue their academic studies, experience life in the United States, and develop a network of peers in their U.S. host communities. Administered as part of IIE’s Syria Consortium for Higher Education in Crisis, IIE will partner with accredited U.S. higher education institutions that commit to full tuition waivers to support qualified Syrian students. The IIE scholarship will provide placement at an accredited U.S. higher education institution and up to $50,000 to cover students’ living expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

• Applicants must be Syrian citizens or Palestinians with a Travel Document;

• Applicants must have proficiency in written and spoken English to carry out their proposed studies. Applicants

will be required to the TOEFL or IELTS exam prior to the start of their studies;

• The scholarship is open to undergraduate students "Bachelor" and graduate students "Master." Students seeking

a Doctoral degree are NOT eligible for this scholarship;

• The scholarship is open to all academic fields with the exception of medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry. Law is

only available on the graduate level;

• Preference will be given to applicants who have clear academic, professional, and personal goals. Applicants

should demonstrate civic engagement and the desire to help rebuild their home country.

How to Apply

Students interested in applying to IIE’s Scholarship Program for Syrian students will need to complete a pre-application and submit any available supporting documents. If you are deemed eligible and fulfil the basic application criteria, you will be asked to submit a formal online application. The pre-application is NOT a guarantee of being awarded a scholarship.

Although not required, we recommend you submit any available supporting documents such as:

• Copies of high school and/or university transcripts;

• TOEFL or IELTS scores if available. Students who do not have TOEFL or IELTS scores available will be required to

take one of the two language tests prior to the start of their studies;

• SAT/ACT scores.

Please note that you cannot save the pre-application and submit at a later point. Once submitted, you cannot change your entry. Make sure to read all requirements and questions before completing the pre-application. We recommend you have any available supporting documents uploaded to your computer before starting the pre-application. New Catalyst Trust will join with IIE to create PEER - the Platform for Education in Emergencies Response

Former NYU president John Sexton spoke at an event at IIE in New York last Thursday to announce the creation of the Catalyst Trust for Universal Education, which will address the educational needs of the more than 57 million children worldwide who do not have access to school due to current conflicts and the refugee crisis. The Catalyst Trust’s first major initiative will be to partner with IIE to create the Platform for Education in Emergencies Response (PEER), a new global clearinghouse to identify scholarships and opportunities and connect displaced and refugee students with resources they can use, anywhere in the world. IIE president Allan Goodman joined Mr. Sexton to announce the new project and lead a discussion with Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the United Nations special envoy on global education, of how education, government and philanthropic leaders can help meet the emergency needs.

In addition, IIE is launching a new scholarship fund, with private support, that will support a total of 65 Syrian students through full scholarships or emergency grants for living expenses. Earlier this month, IIE also joined with the non-profit Jusoor to create a new scholarship fund, 100 Syrian Women, 10,000 Syrian Lives; nine students started their studies in the United States in fall of 2016.

IIE and Qualcomm Celebrate Global Inclusion & Diversity Scholarship and Mentorship Program for Women in STEM

A group of outstanding university women studying technology fields at top universities in China came together to celebrate their accomplishments on September 22 at the Qualcomm office in Beijing. Students toured the Qualcomm research and development lab, learn about Qualcomm’s STEM initiatives, and participated in a workshop where the students will assess their strengths and explore their professional and personal goals beyond the six-month program mentorship period. Thirty-six university women in China and India were selected in early 2016 to receive a competitive scholarship through the Women Enhancing Technology (WeTech) Qualcomm Global Scholars Program, which matches each scholar with a Qualcomm mentor in her field. After a successful first year, WeTech has opened applications for students in South Korea and Taiwan. The WeTech Qualcomm Global Scholars Program is part of IIE’s and Qualcomm’s long-term efforts to advance educational and professional opportunities for women and girls on a global scale.

Two winners per year will receive HK$30 million (around US$3.9 million) each in cash and project funding, making this the largest educational prize in the world. The Yidan Prize seeks to recognize an individual or small group whose work transforms education in an innovative way that can be replicated and repeated around the world to improve education quality and provide better access to education for all. Opportunities for U.S. and Mexico Academic Collaboration

IIE’s Center for International Partnerships recently led a delegation of U.S. university faculty and administrators to Mexico as part of IIE’s International Academic Partnership Program. The universities chosen to take part in the delegation were California State University San Bernardino, Lehman College, Rutgers University, Slippery Rock University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. While in the country, the group visited twelve universities and two governmental organizations in Mexico City, Puebla, and Querétaro. The ten-year impact study of the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP) highlights this work. "The results of the 2015 Global Alumni Survey show that 185 IFP alumni are working in local or regional government agencies, 189 are working in national government agencies, and 127 alumni are working in national non-governmental agencies. These alumni have not only drafted policies at their organizations, but have also provided trainings, technical assistance, and have been involved in strategy development affecting approximately 4 million individuals."

State Department and Airbnb Announce Partnership to Support Gilman Scholars in China

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky announced a new partnership to expand the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program in China at an event at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. on September 12. The collaboration between Airbnb and the Gilman Program supports the State Department’s goal of expanding opportunities for students of limited financial means to study abroad. The State Department is working through public-private partnerships like this one to provide more opportunities for American students to study abroad. The Gilman Program, implemented by IIE, provides need-based scholarships to U.S. undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented in study or internships abroad. Gilman Scholars receive scholarships of up to $5,000 and students studying critical languages, including Chinese, are eligible for an additional $3,000. Airbnb is committing $80,000 per year for Gilman Scholarships to China, which begin this academic year.

San Francisco Bay Area Companies Mentor Emerging Women Tech Leaders from 19 Countries

Adobe, LinkedIn and Google are among more than 30 leading tech companies in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley that are hosting emerging women tech leaders from 19 countries for an intensive program of mentoring and professional networking this month. Out of more than 2,300 applicants, 90 extraordinary women—the top 4%—from Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East have been selected to come to the United States to participate in TechWomen, a five-week program that empowers women for leadership in their fields and their societies. TechWomen, launched in 2011 by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), is managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in San Francisco.

In addition to working one-on-one on professional projects with their mentors, the TechWomen Emerging Leaders will attend workshops hosted by program partners to develop projects that address social and environmental issues in their communities. The U.S. Department of State’s Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan said, "The State Department is committed to investing in women across the globe through programs like TechWomen because we know that no country can get ahead if it leaves half of its people behind."

Freeman-ASIA scholarships provide funding to undergraduate U.S. citizens and permanent residents with demonstrated financial need to support them as they study abroad in East and Southeast Asia. The Freeman Foundation’s generous support for the relaunch of Freeman-ASIA builds on prior grants to IIE that funded more than 4,500 American undergraduates in Asia from 2001 to 2014. The newly available awards will advance IIE’s Generation Study Abroad, a five-year initiative aiming to double the number of U.S. students abroad by the end of the decade. The Freeman-ASIA relaunch is the latest of several steps IIE has taken to increase the number and diversity of Americans studying abroad and their study destinations. Ethiopia Tilahun, Country Director of IIE’s Addis Ababa office, reflects on the graduation ceremony where 100 girls graduated from high school and from IIE’s Higher Education Readiness program in Ethiopia. Testimonies from the girls themselves are a strong indication of just how powerful this program was not just on the students, but on their families as well. Ethiopia said, "On their graduation day, we wanted to celebrate the accomplishments of the HER girls and provide a forum for other organizations to see the program’s impact on beneficiaries [...] Representatives from government offices, international and local NGOs, UN agencies and others attended the graduation ceremony and left with excitement—some even thinking about how to join hands with us in this precious work of changing lives for the better."

USAID SHERA seeks to fund approximately five Centers for Collaborative Research (CCRs) on specific topics at top-tier Indonesian institutions in partnership with at least one U.S. higher education institution partner and at least three Indonesian higher education institution partners. The anticipated amount of funding per CCR is US$3 million over four years with the lead Indonesian institution as the primary sub-recipient of the funding. The USAID SHERA team is currently accepting Expressions of Interest (EOIs) through the USAID SHERA website through September 15, 2016. USAID SHERA will review completed EOIs to confirm candidates’ eligibility and establish target applicants for the full Request for Applications, to be released by the end of September 2016. Interested U.S. higher education intuitions should contact potential Indonesian applicants directly to discuss participating as a partnership member.

IIE’s Women Enhancing Technology Program Celebrates the Next Generation of Female Tech Leaders in India

Middle and high school female students will compete in the Women Enhancing Technology (WeTech) Graduation Pitch Event in Bengaluru, India, on August 20th. The WeTech program, managed by IIE, will host the event to recognize and showcase the hard work of 90 girls from Bangalore who aspire to be the next generation of leaders in information, communication and technology (ICT). Mentored by senior leaders from Qualcomm India and Goldman Sachs over a period of three months, participants at the Graduation Pitch Event will have an opportunity to observe pitches from each of the 18 teams of middle and high school students, hear from executives in the technology industry, and get inspired by dynamic Indian women leaders from various sectors. Now in its third year, WeTech’s Afterschool Program has connected more than 200 girls in India with this unique hands-on learning and mentoring experience.

Connecting with the World is a course created by IIE that trains Ministry officials and higher education administrators in Myanmar on how to develop and run a successful international office. A key component of this course is the virtual mentorship component in which IIE matches current experts in the field of international education with the participating Myanmar university representatives. Mentors will be responsible for grading and providing feedback on participant assignments, and being available for coaching and mentoring throughout the course, which will run from October 2016- May 2017. IIE is looking for dedicated international education professionals to commit to mentoring up to two Connecting with the World participants. Jill Biden Speaks about the Importance of International Education at EducationUSA Forum

Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady of the United States, spoke to over 600 international education professionals at the 2016 EducationUSA Forum, organized by IIE in cooperation with the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. She spoke passionately about the importance of international education in building communities around the world. As a professor of English at Northern Virginia Community College, Dr. Biden highlighted the role of community colleges in educating students from diverse backgrounds and giving them the tools to be who they desire to be. She concluded her speech with a quote from George Washington Carver, who said "Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom."

The EducationUSA Forum is an annual event that brings together EducationUSA advisers and U.S. higher education professionals to discuss trends in international student mobility to the U.S. About 600 people from across the U.S. and around the world are participating in this year's Forum in Washington DC.

The Institute of International Education’s Center for International Partnerships, in partnership with Vietnam National University and USAID Vietnam, invites accredited U.S. colleges and universities to participate in the U.S. - Vietnam Academic Partnerships Workshop in Hanoi. This two-day workshop will provide practical and action-oriented training to Vietnamese and U.S. colleges and universities with the goal of increasing institutional capacity for implementing successful international partnerships, and enhancing U.S. - Vietnam academic cooperation. At the end of this workshop, participants will have an action-oriented roadmap for further developing and implementing a strategic plan for increasing U.S. – Vietnam partnerships on their own campus. There is no registration fee for this workshop, however any U.S. institution must register with IIE and cover all travel costs, including international airfare, accommodation, and transportation. Lunches are included on both days of the workshop. We recommend that institutions send two representatives: a Senior International Officer and partnership manager or other functional office staff.

Eduardo Contreras, Director of Studies Abroad at the University of Portland, discusses the important role that IIE has played in serving refugee communities since the 1920s, when students and scholars displaced by the Bolshevik Revolution were aided through the Russian Student Fund. "Beyond the basic human needs of food, water, and shelter, there are also unprecedented educational needs, which IIE has played an active role in addressing. Today, the Syria Consortium is answering this call by encouraging universities to provide scholarships to qualified Syrian students. The IIE Scholar Rescue Fund is offering funding to host institutions that can offer temporary academic positions for Syrian scholars to continue their teaching and research until it’s safe to return home [...] As much as the work of supporting refugees is future oriented, it is also a vital part of IIE’s history."

The UK is the number one European sender of students to the U.S., and universities can take advantage of this growing attraction of the U.S. to UK students. On September 23-24, the U.S.-UK Fulbright Commission – EducationUSA will host USA College Day in London. This undergraduate fair is the largest in Europe with 4,700 attendees and 190 institutions attending last year. During the 2014-15 academic year, 5,207 UK students were undertaking full undergraduate degrees in the U.S., marking a 23% increase from 2009-10. Many students choose the U.S. for the quality and reputation of its universities, the flexibility of the liberal arts curriculum, and the availability of funding. Students are also drawn to U.S. campus life and culture. Additionally, university fees tripled in the UK with the 2012-13 academic year, and this may also have contributed to a rise in interest in study abroad in recent years.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce the Fall 2016 & Academic Year 2016-2017 awards offered. We thank the 80 selection panelists from various colleges and universities across the nation who met at the IIE offices in Houston and Washington, D.C. to review nearly 2,900 applications for the fall and academic year application cycle. More than 850 outstanding students were selected to receive the scholarship to participate in credit-bearing study abroad programs and career-oriented internships in countries all around the world. The Gilman Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries they go by supporting U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not consider these unique and valuable opportunities due to financial constraints.

Robin Matross Helms, director of the American Council on Education’s Center for Internationalization and Global Engagement, is a contributing author to IIE’s recent publication, Global Perspectives on Strategic International Partnerships. In her blog post she discusses the how we can better address strategic partnership goals and action plans to maximize the returns on these linkages for students and faculty, as well as organizational structure as a whole. Helms writes, "For a partnership to be strategic, it should contribute to and advance institutional strategy in some way. Has the institution identified particular academic or programmatic areas that it wants to further develop? Cathy Martine is President, National Business, AT&T Business Solutions & International, leading one of AT&T’s largest business units that serves approximately 95% of AT&T’s business customers in the U.S. with mobility and highly secure cloud solutions. Cathy holds a B.A. in Economics from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY (summa cum laude). She also holds a M.S. from M.I.T., where she was a Sloan Fellow. In addition, she holds an MBA from New York University's Stern School of Business.

Mahboob Mahmood is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Knowledge Platform. Established in 2000, Knowledge Platform is a leading Asian learning solutions company, with a presence in Singapore, China, India, and Pakistan, and partners in the Philippines and Thailand. Tech company and longtime WeTech partner Qualcomm is expanding their free Qcamps for middle schoolers this summer after the success of the first year's cohort. The new camps will connect 60 students from California's Vista Unified School District with a range of first-hand engineering experiences that give campers insight into how technology is used in our everyday world. Campers will problem-solve as teams, develop communication skills, and engage in prototyping, documentation, and presentation. Throughout the rest of the year students will be invited to participate in hands-on projects, mentoring opportunities, and hackathons. The initiative is part of an ongoing program designed to develop long-term interest in technology and a support greater access to STEM education.

IIE Blog: 6 New Developments in China’s Philanthropy Sector

Paul Turner, Director of IIE’s East Asia offices in Beijing and Hong Kong, along with Siusie Hsiao of IIE’s Beijing office, provide an overview of the growing philanthropic work taking place in mainland China. Turner notes that "IIE is constantly developing new initiatives to address the needs of this burgeoning sector. Our work with the Ford Foundation under the Learning Circles for Chinese Philanthropy program has allowed us to identify a number of areas where we can support the sector drawing on the resources from both our offices."

Disability is Not Inability: IFP Issue Brief

More than one billion people live with some form of disability, and 80 percent of them in developing countries. As part of its aim to provide higher education opportunities to disadvantaged groups from around the developing world, the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP) provided graduate fellowships to many emerging social justice leaders who have disabilities and/or work in areas of disability rights, advocacy, and service provision.

In the fourth IFP Issue Brief, IFP alumni who work in the disability field were asked a simple question: What challenges do individuals with disabilities face in your country and how are you working to find solutions? This brief shares the stories of alumni disability advocates in five IFP countries: Chile, India, Kenya, Russia, and Uganda. Their responses indicate that regardless of their location or impairment, people with disabilities face similar challenges at the individual, community, and national levels. Beyond these common challenges, IFP alumni are also united by the fact that their fellowship experience gave them new tools and perspectives to promote disability rights, improve services, and advance inclusive policies in the developing world.

Will a British exit from the European Union lead to a drop in enrollment of European students at UK universities? This is the question addressed in a recent Inside Higher Ed article shortly after the historic vote on June 23. IIE’s Rajika Bhandari, deputy vice president of research and evaluation, contributed to the conversation around the topic of student mobility. "There are so many unknowns right now," Bhandari said. "There’s of course the doom and gloom, the predictions that are being made about how this might negatively affect student mobility, but I think there may be some other ways to look at this. What we may actually see is there may be more opportunities for students outside of Europe. Given the currency fluctuations and the devaluation of the pound, we may actually see more international students from non-EU countries - including from the U.S. - considering going to the UK."

More than 30 federal agencies including NASA, the Smithsonian, the State Department, National Parks Service, and others are involved in this program that plays an important role in advancing the federal government’s reach in diplomacy, development, journalism, trade, environment, health, and agriculture initiatives. Although this is unpaid, volunteer work, eInterns make connections that make a difference, gain valuable experience, and sometimes get course credit. The Institute of International Education's (IIE) Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) is pleased to announce a call for applications from scholars facing threats to their lives or academic work. Fellowships support temporary academic positions at colleges, universities, and other research institutions outside their home countries anywhere in the world. Since IIE-SRF's founding in 2002, the program has provided academic fellowships to over 650 scholars from 55 countries, placing them at nearly 350 host partner institutions in 41 countries.

Who can Apply:

Professors, researchers, and public intellectuals from any country, field, or discipline may apply. Please refer eligible candidates and forward this announcement to any academic colleagues who may be interested.

• Qualifying applicants are currently facing or have recently fled from direct and immediate threats.

• Preference is given to scholars with a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in their field and who have extensive teaching

or research experience at a university, college, or other institution of higher learning.

• Women and scholars from under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
