New York has highest tax burden in the country

According to a study recently released by the Tax Foundation, New York had the highest tax burden of any state in the nation in 2011. On average, New Yorkers spent 12.6 percent of their per capita income in 2011 on state and local taxes. This marks the third year in a row that New York had the nation’s highest taxes.

New Jersey was a close second with 12.3 percent and Connecticut was third at 11.9 percent. Wyoming had the overall lowest tax burden of any state with residents paying 9.7 percent of their income to state and local taxes.
