REGINA, SASK., NOV. 3, 2016—Agricultural Manufacturers
of Canada (AMC) welcomes the government’s announcement that it will invest in
expanding the access of Canadian goods to global markets.
"We applaud the government’s $10.1 billion investment
in trade and transportation projects, announced in the economic and fiscal
update on Nov. 1," says AMC president Leah Olson. "In 2015, agricultural
equipment manufacturers exported $1.8-billion worth of products to 154
countries. This much-needed investment in building more efficient
transportation corridors to international markets will help Canada’s
agricultural manufacturing sector—already one of the best in the world—become
even stronger."
AMC also supports the government’s $2 billion
investment in rural and northern communities as well as its focus on green
infrastructure. Just over 50 per cent of AMC’s manufacturing members are located
in rural communities with less than 10,000 people. Some agricultural equipment
manufacturers are located on the family farm or in communities where the number
of people the manufacturer employs is larger than the community it is in.
"Our industry is unique, not only that it’s developed
in Canada, but because it has impacts globally. Our products are helping to
feed the world. Our environmental footprint is better today than 30 years ago
because of the equipment being used to reduce fertilizer redundancy and improve
soil conservation," says Olson. "Innovation is not just a way of being or
something that happens in an isolated facility, it is in how we manufacture and
manage our day-to-day operations. It is
what drives us to develop some of the best agriculture equipment in the world."
AMC looks forward to working with the government on
its funding priorities as it works out details for Budget 2017.
