Congressional Focus
The House and Senate began their annual August recess on Aug. 5, and are scheduled to return on Sept. 9.
The government runs out of annual spending authority at the end of its fiscal year - Sept. 30 - but House Republicans are talking about passing a short-term extension, possibly to Dec. 15, to provide breathing room as they debate a new debt-ceiling increase.
