Spring is here, and activities are in full bloom. The Leaders of our Texas SHRM Chapters will be gathering in beautiful El Paso on May 6th for a full day of sharing and a focus on Leadership Development. El Paso SHRM www.epshrm.org has pulled out all the stops to plan a great event for us all. The El Paso Society for Human Resources Management (EPSHRM) Chapter partnered with the University of Texas (UTEP) Career Services Center and conducted mock interviews and provided assistance with resume writing to college students transitioning into the workforce.

The event was hosted on March 24, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the UTEP Career Services Center.

North Texas SHRM is gearing up for its Annual Conference, scheduled for May 19 and 20, on the campus of Texas Woman’s University. The two-day conference offers 14 HRCI and SHRM credits, with 5 of those being strategic!

It’s official! The Tarleton State University Fort Worth SHRM Student Chapter #5750 was officially chartered! Congratulations to everyone who helped make this a reality!

Student SHRM chapters are an integral part of the SHRM network. The student program was created over forty years ago to promote interaction between Human Resource Management students and practitioners. Today, the student program has over 250 affiliated student chapters and more than 19,000 student members nation-wide!

The stakes are higher today than they have ever been before regarding executive compensation and the scrutiny imposed by the federal and state governments and the national news media. Negative media reaction and public outcry in cases of executive compensation packages viewed as excessive, regardless as to whether or not they really are, has set the stage for government regulators, the Internal Revenue Service and State Attorney General Offices to investigate, audit and suppress abuses. As a result of their findings, more federal and state statutes and regulations concerning not-for-profit executive compensation are being enacted.

Actions taken by State Legislatures and Attorney General Offices in New Jersey and New York to limit executive compensation and reported investigations of not-for-profit organizations to rein in suspected abusive executive compensation practices are acting as a stimulus for even more government regulation. As a result, this is causing many not-for-profit boards across the country to examine their board governance strategies and practices concerning executive compensation and how they will pay their top people in the future.

If you haven’t already visited the VLRC this year, you should! There is a new site currently in progress that already contains helpful information for Volunteer Leaders in the areas of Membership. The Texoma HRMA has grown their membership by over 50% in just a few months! Karla Shugart, 2016 Membership Director, has worked diligently to ensure that all paperwork was completed and their members were active and counted.

Happy Hour, AHRMA Style, took place at Max's Wine Dive March 22. More than 125 enthusiastic members and soon-to-be members attended. Sponsored by the AHRMA Membership committee, this event was designed for major networking, a membership drive, and the first kick off event for SHRM Foundation fundraising.

The number of charges filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission rose in the Commission’s last fiscal year, and the amount of money the agency recovered through administrative enforcement and litigation rose sharply in 2015 over 2014. (The fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30.)
