Urge Congress to Support Frozen Fruit, Vegetable Snacks in Schools

Show your support for helping enhance childhood nutrition by urging your senators to support a farm bill amendment offered by Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., and Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., to expand USDA's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program to include all forms — including frozen. Such an expansion will enable school nutritionists to serve the widest possible variety of healthy and affordable fruits and vegetables throughout the entire school year, helping promote a lifetime of healthy eating habits.

Status of CLFP Priority Bills

May has been a busy month in the Legislature given the mandated deadlines to move bills through the policy and fiscal committees of each house and off the floors to the other house by May 31, 2013. CLFP staff has been actively engaged on several measures that would have direct impacts to specific member companies and to the industry as a whole. In addition to the busy legislative calendar in May, CLFP has also been engaged on Governor Brown’s proposed reforms to Proposition 65.

Vidak wins election, but faces runoff with Perez in Senate District 16 Election

Republican Andy Vidak, the winner in a 16th Senate District special election, will now face a runoff with Democrat opponent Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez. The special election held Tuesday, May 21, saw five candidates running for the Senate seat vacated by former Senator Marco Rubio, with Vidak and Perez the leading candidates. Because it is a special election, one candidate had to win more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a July 23 runoff against the second-place finisher. Rubio's surprise resignation in February spurred the special election in the district he represented, which has since been redrawn into oblivion.

Air Resources Board Finally Schedules AB 32 Scoping Plan Update Workshop

After months of foot-dragging, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has scheduled the long-awaited workshop to update the AB 32 Scoping Plan. The workshop will commence at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2013, in Sacramento and will run until 3 p.m. In addition, the workshop will be webcast and can be accessed the day of the workshop.

Pistachios in California

The commercial pistachio industry is relatively new in the United States, although its success grew rapidly after its establishment. Although the pistachio was introduced to California in the 1850s, they were not commercially grown until the 1930s.
