Immediate Curtailment of Post-1914 Appropriative Water Rights

On May 27, the State Water Resources Control Board (Board) issued a notice of unavailability of water and immediate curtailment of all diversions under post-1914 appropriative water rights in the Sacramento and San Joaquin watersheds (Notice). The Notice also warns that the Board may curtail some pre-1914 appropriative water rights, and even some riparian water rights, in the future if current conditions persist.

May 30 "House of Origin" Bill Deadline

Friday, May 30 was the deadline for the Senate and Assembly to pass bills introduced in their "house of origin." CLFP was able to stop one onerous labeling bill, but several other CLFP opposed measures passed to the second house where efforts will continue to stop them before they reach the Governor’s desk.

DOSH Seeks Major Changes to Heat Illness Standard

The Division of Occupational Safety and Health has just proposed major revisions to California's heat illness prevention standard. The action is not formal rule-making, but sending its proposal to the Standards Board is a big first step in revising the almost 10-year-old regulation. California has lead the nation in heat illness standards.

Adaptation and Risk Management Focus of Climate Change Seminar

On Thursday, May 29, Governor Brown’s office, Stanford University, Earth Innovation Institute, and UC Berkeley hosted scientists involved in the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II in a panel discussion of the IPCC’s recent report. The report entitled Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability included a Summary for Policymakers (SPM), focusing on the impacts and risks related to climate change.
