The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is now accepting applications for the State Water Efficiency and Enhancement Program (SWEEP), authorized by emergency drought legislation (Senate Bill 103). An estimated $10 million in competitive grant funding will be awarded to provide financial assistance to agricultural operations for implementation of water conservation measures that result in increased water efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

The state is experiencing less total rainfall, less snowpack in the mountains, and earlier snowmelt. This means that less water is available to generate hydroelectricity. Also, less snowpack that is melting earlier could reduce the amount of water that generates hydropower during the summer months when electricity demand and prices are highest.

CLFP held its Fifth Annual Capitol Day on June 17, 2014. The day was very successful, and CLFP member companies had the opportunity to meet and converse with legislators and legislative staff. This event gives member companies an opportunity to build relationships and educate policy-makers about the issues impacting the food processing industry.
