On February 10, Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) staged a Capitol steps media event to introduce his package of clean-energy and climate change bills. Surrounded by other Democrats, environmentalists, clean-tech companies, de León said these bills would aid California in meeting its energy goals and help to power a new clean-energy economy.

UC Davis will be hosting its annual Agribusiness Workshop. The workshop is designed for mid-to senior-level managers in farming or food processing enterprises who would benefit from discussing strategic issues affecting the agribusiness industry. The group will discuss some case studies and hear from a number of guest speakers on a wide range of topics, including: groundwater, food labeling/Prop 65, consumer buying decisions and exports.

Under the Good Manufacturing Practice regulations for thermally-processed low-acid foods, can closure and processing departments of food industries must be operated under the supervision of a person who has successfully completed a course in the principles of thermal processing and container evaluation, taught by an FDA approved institution. To assist food industries in complying with the FDA/USDA regulations, a two-day acidified and four-day low acid Better Process Control School is offered by the Food Science Program at Chapman University in conjunction with the FDA and the Grocery Manufacturers Association.

Offered by USDA-APHIS and Chapman University, the fifth annual "Opportunities in Phytosanitary Irradiation for Fresh Produce Workshop" will take place March 25-26, 2015 at Chapman University in Orange, CA. Over the past five years, Chapman University has partnered with U.S. produce industries and USDA APHIS PPQ to conduct quality studies on a variety of fresh fruit. This project is funded by a USDA FAS Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops Grant and is designed specifically to assist in developing export markets for U.S. commodities. This workshop is provided to participants at no charge.
