Proposition 65, California’s law that requires labels on products containing chemicals that may cause cancer or reproductive harm, has been a boon to some trial attorneys, but has had a questionable effect on public health. There are 847 chemicals on the Proposition 65 list, which is managed by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. Warnings are required if a listed substance in a product has just a one in 100,000 chance of causing cancer over 70 years.

The California Business Roundtable recently released the results of a new statewide survey to gauge Californians’ opinions on climate change and the current climate change legislation, including Senate Bill 350. This survey expanded upon other recent public polling on climate change by examining the attitudes of over 1,000 registered voters regarding the potential costs of these policies for electricity and fuels.

CLFP is partnering with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) to provide two workshops in October specifically for food processing companies. Due to state environmental regulations such as the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and the greenhouse gas Cap-and-Trade Program, the cost of energy remains an area of significant focus for the coming years. Keeping energy costs in line will become even more vital in the effort to remain competitive.
