Artificial intelligence burst into mainstream awareness less than three years ago with tools like ChatGPT and image generators such as Google Gemini. However, AI – particularly machine learning – has been shaping electromagnetic spectrum operations (EMSO) for decades. In this episode of From the Crows’ Nest, host Ken Miller dives into the cutting edge of AI in next-generation EMSO systems with Rob Hyland, Principal Scientist and Director of Program Transition at Charles River Analytics. Rob discusses how “hybrid” AI is revolutionizing EMSO, enabling systems to learn entire segments of the electromagnetic spectrum, accelerate upgrades and enhance adaptability. He also highlights the challenges of applying AI to modern threats, stressing the urgent need for specialized talent to model, train and integrate AI within the defense sector.

In the latest AOC member-exclusive episode of From the Crows’ Nest, host Ken Miller welcomes back defense analyst and JED editor John Knowles for a deep dive into the pressing issues shaping the future of electronic warfare (EW) and electromagnetic spectrum operations (EMSO). The discussion spans a range of critical topics, from defense budget uncertainties to the need for disruptive changes in EMS strategy and the growing importance of spectrum sharing.

In my recent book, "Relativistic Field Theory for Microwave Engineers," I discuss the often-overlooked connection between Maxwell's equations and Einstein's theory of special relativity. Electrical engineers, especially those who work in the areas of microwaves and wireless radio technology, are well-positioned to have a unique perspective on these subjects, as it was wave solutions to Maxwell's equations, revealing for the first time that light is an electromagnetic wave, which motivated special relativity in the first place.
