This Council will advise on new and existing NAFA products, comment on future direction, and point out new opportunities for the Association. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood released updated 2009 fatality and injury data showing that highway deaths fell to 33,808 for the year, the lowest number since 1950. The record-breaking decline in traffic fatalities occurred even while estimated vehicle miles traveled in 2009 increased by 0.2 percent over 2008 levels.

Travelers announced a potential discount of up to 15 percent on certain auto liability insurance premiums for qualifying businesses that effectively use telematics technology to monitor their owned commercial fleets and driver behavior. To qualify for a discount, businesses must show they have installed vehicle telematics devices in a sufficient number of their fleet vehicles and that they are actively incorporating safety information from the devices into their ongoing safety feedback to drivers, at least on a quarterly basis.

Mitsubishi Motors' new i-MiEV electric vehicle is making its way across Canada, showcasing its innovative technology. Mitsubishi has now joined General Motors Co. and Nissan Motor Co. as another major automobile manufacturer with targets to release an electric vehicle within the next year. The Province of Ontario has announced that its goal is to have electric cars make up 5 percent of all vehicles in Ontario by the year 2020.

As a new generation of cars and light trucks start appearing on the market, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are jointly proposing changes to the fuel economy labels consumers see on the window of every new vehicle in dealer showrooms. The proposed rule seeks public comment on label design options and related issues.

The rebate will be offered through Nissan's network of dealerships in the state and will be applied at the time the vehicle is purchased. Nissan has been working with the state of Tennessee and the Tennessee Valley Authority since forming a partnership in 2008 on the promotion of zero-emission mobility in the state. The state of Tennessee also will be the manufacturing home for the Nissan LEAF beginning in 2012.

Nissan North America and the state of Hawaii announced a partnership to advance zero-emission mobility by promoting the development of electric vehicles, and an electric-vehicle charging network, throughout the state. The partnership, which was announced at the Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo in Honolulu, marks Nissan’s first definitive agreement in the United States and will help to foster the adoption of electric-vehicle technology.
