The government is investigating new fires involving the lithium-ion batteries in General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet Volt to assess the fire risk in the electric car after a serious crash. One Volt battery pack that was being closely monitored following a government crash test caught fire, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement on November 25.

Vehicle owners are continuing to experience a high number of problems with factory-installed navigation systems, primarily with routing quality and system usability, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study released November 22.

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America issued a consumer alert on MaxiGuard MG Super Premium 10W-40 motor oil. The product that was tested was purchased in New Jersey, but is also available in New York, Connecticut, and other states and may cause harm to an automobile engine and void warranties.

Shell Lubricants announced on November 23 the arrival of its first shipment of gas-to-liquid (GTL) base oil at the Port of Houston. The product will be stored at a hub in Houston and routed to GTL-enabled blending facilities throughout the United States.

Ethanol futures tumbled to the lowest price in more than eight months on signs of lower blending demand. Futures dropped two days after an Energy Department report showed stockpiles climbed to a 12-week high last week while production of conventional gasoline blended with ethanol fell 1.4 percent to 5.13 million barrels a day.
