U.S. Representative Richard Hanna (R-NY) has announced that 51 Members of Congress sent a letter on September 3 to Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx reiterating their concerns about the Hours of Service (HOS) final rule which came into effect on July 1, 2013.

Ford is recalling 370,000 cars due to potential corrosion to their steering shaft that may result in loss of steering. One of those models caught up in the recall was the perennial favorite for the Public Safety fleet segment, the Ford Crown Victoria. No incidents or injuries have been reported.

NHTSA is examining the use of seat belt-based ignition interlocks in future vehicles. Federal regulators are examining the use of seat belt-based ignition interlocks in light vehicles. The research would conclude in 2015 with no impact on new vehicles until 2017 or 2018.

Americans are less likely to perceive a serious threat from dangerous driving behaviors such as drunk, aggressive, or drowsy driving, according to an analysis of four years of public surveys conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The decreased concern is accompanied by an estimated 5.3 percent increase in annual traffic fatalities, the first annual increase in seven years.

A New Jersey court rules that if the sender of text messages knows that the recipient is driving and texting at the same time, a court may hold the sender responsible for distraction and hold him or her liable for the accident.
