In early-September the Chapter Governing Board voted to change the name of the Greater Hartford Chapter to the Connecticut Chapter. It has since been approved. Based upon the new geographic borders, it was determined that the Connecticut Chapter title most appropriately described the region the chapter encompassed.

The FMCSA has announced that it will address sleep apnea through rulemaking. Also, legislation has been introduced in the House of Representatives opposing increases in the twelve percent federal excise tax on new heavy-duty trucks and trailers and encouraging Congress to review the negative impacts of the existing tax.

As part of the Obama Administration’s ongoing efforts, the U.S. Energy Department and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released in mid-September a new label that features EPA fuel economy estimates and CO2 estimates for used vehicles sold in the United States since 1984.

The big surge in U.S. retail sales last month was possible only because automakers anticipated huge demand from showroom buyers and slashed fleet deliveries virtually across the board. On September 9, Toyota and National Highway Transportation Safety Administration have cited three separate voluntary recalls, involving a total 1,015,249 built between 2006 and 2011. The first recall is not only one of the year’s larger safety-related recalls but it also marks the second time the Japanese giant will attempt to fix a problem with rear suspensions.

Some Augusta, GA Commission members want to take a hard look at the price of maintaining the city’s fleet. Several raised questions on September 9 about extending the decade-old contract with First Vehicle Services after a former employee made allegations that the firm makes unnecessary repairs.

It is with great sadness that NAFA announced the passing of James "JR" Kulesa, CAFM. He was the Fleet Operations Manager for the Fleet Management Division of Palm Beach County, as well as a longtime Sunshine State Chapter Member. He was 51.
