NAFA CHAPTER NEWS
NAFA's Tri-State Chapter held their meeting Business Meeting and Golf Outing on September 17 at Sharon Woods Golf Course, Cincinnati, OH. With 30 attendees on hand, it was sure to be an interesting afternoon of fleet information and golf. Brian Alfred, HSE Consultant from Eli Lilly and Company held a presentation about fleet safety.

The nationally recognized Drive Safely Work Week begins today, October 6, and runs to October 10. This year's theme is "Driving Your Safety Culture Home." The campaign's materials are not dated and may be used anytime throughout the year. Over the past three years, an average of 3500 organizations has participated annually, representing 16.5 million employees per year. NAFA and NAFA's Safety Advisory Council are proud to support the efforts of NETS and Drive Safely Work Week 2014.

Chrysler is recalling 349,442 cars and SUVs from the 2008 model year to fix faulty ignition switches. The switches, Chrysler said, can get stuck, move out of position, and potentially lead to the engine shutting off while the vehicle is motion. The problem can also lead to air bags not functioning. Vehicles included in the recall are 2008 Dodge Charger sedans, Dodge Magnum station wagons, Chrysler 300 sedans, Jeep Commander, and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs.

General Motors published an article in February on its Chevrolet website trumpeting that its 2014 Chevys had earned more five-star overall safety ratings in a new car assessment program than had any other brand. The next day, GM began recalling millions of its cars for a deadly ignition defect. The stellar rankings had been awarded by NHTSA, which has a record of missteps that goes well beyond its current dealings with GM.

A top U.S. lawmaker is concerned that the government isn’t using the vehicles it owns enough, potentially leading to a waste of taxpayer dollars for cars that are just sitting around. Representative John Mica, Florida Republican and Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Government Operations, sent a letter to the head of the General Services Administration (GSA) in early-September calling on the agency to turn over documents related to its stewardship of the federal vehicle fleet.

Motorists in the Metropolitan Detroit area paying the highest premium for insurance in the country, according to a new study. On average, a motorist in the Detroit area will pay 165 percent of the national average for auto insurance, according to research by Quadrant Information Services. Those in the sprawling New York metroplex come in just behind, but they pay a mere 36 percent more than the average for motorists across the country.

California’s new law governing autonomous driving went into effect on September 16, leaving the road open to pilotless cars. Audi is the first company to receive an autonomous driving permit issued by California. The research is aimed at preparing a highly-automated piloted driving system for freeway traffic conditions. Audi envisions this technology could be ready for consumer introduction within five years.

"NAFA Fleet Management Association is seeking a uniform, national program to address greenhouse gas emissions and fuel efficiency that reflects the commercial needs of vocational vehicle fleets," NAFA CEO Phillip E. Russo, CAE said, extending an invitation for the regulatory teams drafting these rules to meet with NAFA's Phase 2 Workgroup. "NAFA, with expertise in fleet management, stands as a willing partner in crafting regulations that achieve the goals of lower emissions and better fuel economy."

It is with great shock and sadness that NAFA learned of the passing of Henri Van Parys, Marketing Consultant and Freelance Writer based in Florida. Henri was one of NAFA's many talented freelance writers and was published in FLEETSolutions magazine as recently as this past May.

On October 1, Fleet Response announced NAFA Affiliate Allison Lanzilotta, formerly Vice President of Business Development, has been promoted to Executive Vice President. SUSTAINABILITY
An ethanol plant in Buffalo Lake, MN, has partly reopened after a long journey through bankruptcy court, closures, and new owners. With fresh capital and new equipment acquired by the latest owner — West Ventures LLC — Buffalo Lake Advanced Biofuels reopened several divisions of its ethanol plant in early-September with roughly 35 workers. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to produce eighteen million gallons of ethanol a year.

General Motors Co. will recall about 3,200 vans powered with compressed natural gas that could leak and catch fire — the Detroit automaker's second recall for leaking natural gas since last year. The new recall covers 3,196 Model Year(s) 2011-2014 Chevrolet Express CNG and GMC Savana CNG vehicles in the U.S. and thirteen in Canada.
