Japan's three biggest carmakers said on May 12 they would expand a huge global recall triggered by potentially fatal air bags made by Takata Corp, saying they were taking back millions of vehicles worldwide for investigation. Toyota Motor Corp and Nissan Motor Co. said they were recalling some 6.5 million vehicles globally. Honda Motor Co. Ltd. later followed suit, tacking on another five million vehicles to be recalled.

Major questions are being raised about Indianapolis’ new electric vehicle fleet, dubbed "Freedom Fleet." A council committee voted in late-April to seek a subpoena of the unedited contract. The Public Safety Committee is now calling for a full review of the agreement with Vision Fleet Capital Inc. The committee also expressed concern over the vehicles being used by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The average price of gasoline has moved higher for roughly a month, adding some 23 cents per gallon due to higher crude oil costs and a number of refinery issues. AAA pegged the average price across the country at $2.62 per gallon, which represents the most expensive average price of the year. Motorists are paying eight cents more per gallon than one week ago and 22 cents more than one month ago to refuel their vehicles.

The two companies are now part of TÜV SÜD Auto Service and operate within the company’s fleet business unit alongside Fleet Logistics. NAFA Affiliate Bob Glose has thirteen years of diverse experience at CEI, spread over two terms of service. He began in 1997 and served as Manager of Network and Infrastructure in the IT department, before leaving in 2000 for a five-year stint as head of IT security for an insurance company. The company announced the promotion of NAFA Affiliate Brian Kinniry to Senior Director of Strategic Services on May 12. Kinniry, a ten-year veteran with CEI, will be responsible for leading the company’s innovation and technology integration initiatives related to driver safety programs.

Automotive fleet management company Wheels, Inc. has hired e-commerce industry veteran Tim O’Hara as its new Chief Information Officer. O’Hara joined Wheels on May 1 as the head of the company’s information technology departments. In late-April, Cooper Tire & Rubber Company announced it had completed work under a $1.5 million government grant to develop advanced tire technology aimed at increasing vehicle fuel efficiency. The grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, called for Cooper to develop technology for light vehicle tires that delivered a minimum three percent improvement in vehicle fuel efficiency while lowering average tire weight by at least twenty percent, all without sacrificing performance.

Ford Motor Co. will launch a new compressed natural gas version of its F-150 pickup, the first light-duty full-size truck to offer a CNG option. For cars and trucks, it typically offers lower operating costs – though there is a significant up-front investment, as much as $10,000 on the Ford truck. CNG also allows a buyer to maintain the towing and payload capacity of the F-150, unlike some other options.
