With an increase in attendance at this year's 94th Annual Convention, which took place in Palm Desert, Calif. March 6-9, 2013, it was no surprise the technology sessions had standing room only. But the uptick in number isn't the sole reason. Technology, as we all know, is "where it's at," and AGC members need and want to know where it's going. Anxious to hear the latest and greatest in IT construction trends, attendees strapped in, held on and away they went.

AGC took another significant step forward toward the development of interoperability for the construction industry. The association engaged Burger Consulting Group to work with contractors and construction software vendors to accomplish easy data exchange and integrated systems using agcXML schema.

Two Sarasota, Fla.-based entrepreneurs recently announced the release of their new iOS application, MeetrTM. Programmer Patrick Denney and designer Miguel E. Elasmar created a unique application that helps companies and employees calculate the cost of time spent by groups or individuals in meetings, conference calls or other events - all in real time. Meetr helps answer the age-old question of "cost versus benefit," with a humorous and entertaining twist.

Q. I just picked up a Dell printer that we need to utilize on Bid Runs. In the office it works great connected via USB. In the vehicle however, it won't stayed powered on connected via an inverter or a UPS connected to the cigarette lighter. My mechanic says I need an inverter that needs to be installed and wired to the battery ($658 for the device). I thought this printer would not only work with Windows but also with iPads because it's wireless and then found out I need a printer that has "Air print" capabilities to print from iPads. Has anyone else accomplished what I'm trying to do and what did you find was the best solution?

Q. We are in the process of replacing our primary router. This unit also runs our VPN service. My Cisco tech has suggested we move the VPN service out of the primary router to its own appliance (Cisco ASA5505 unit). So this has me wondering what solutions everyone is using for VPN connectivity (hardware/provider) and whether you're using a software/client or a web-based interface like Cisco "Any Connect." I like the features of "Any Connect" but I hear it's not as fast as the software/client.
