On Friday, June 30, North Pacific Regional Director Ankit Panchal hosted a Town Hall meeting in Las Vegas, NV, the ultimate epicenter of hospitality. 120+ attendees attended the meeting!

After opening remarks, Panchal introduced the former President & CEO of AAHOA and the current CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, William "Chip" Rogers. Rogers addressed AAHOA Members as long-standing friends and gave updates on the industry and AHLA’s The Hospitality Show.

The following segment was a panel discussion on the past, present, and future of AAHOA. It included Past Chair Hitesh (HP) Patel (2018-2019), Past Chair Jagruti Panwala (2019-2020), Treasurer Kamalesh (KP) Patel, and moderated by Ankit. Attendees were in for an insightful discussion as these AAHOA leaders covered several topics, such as AAHOA’s member engagement, vendor partner relationships, advocacy at the state and federal levels, and the newly launched AAHOA Foundation.

Afterward, Larry Cuculic, CEO of Best Western, addressed AAHOA Members as crucial allies and emphasized the collaborative partnership between the brand and members. Cuculic wrapped up his remarks with resounding support for AAHOA, mentioning that nobody did a better job than AAHOA.

With the star power of Las Vegas and the diversity of natural settings, the hospitality industry is a major economic engine in Nevada. AAHOA thanks everyone involved in bringing hoteliers together for a productive town hall meeting in one of the country’s top cities.

The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA), which represents the majority of U.S. hotel owners, communicated its concerns about one-sided franchising practices in response to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)’s Solicitation for Public Comments on Provisions of Franchise Agreements and Franchisor Business Practices.

AAHOA has long been committed to advocating for adequate protections for its Franchisee members in their relationships with hotel brands. Beginning in March, the FTC, citing reports of “unfair and deceptive practices” that harm Franchisees, solicited comments from business owners regarding how Franchisors “disclose certain aspects and contractual terms of the Franchise relationship, as well as the scope, application, and effect of those aspects and contractual terms.”

AAHOA's submitted response channels the momentum generated by more than a year of member advocacy for sustainable franchising practices. This includes 25 in-person and virtual meetings with hotel brands and their leading executives, six with the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), and more than 50 documented calls and emails since March 2022. AAHOA always has sought to discuss the franchising relationship directly with Franchisors. While many Franchisors have maintained open and productive dialogue, others disengaged from AAHOA for exercising its First Amendment right to support legislation in New Jersey that advances many of the association’s Fair Franchising principles.

The month of July is a busy one for AAHOA!

With two Regional Conferences & Trade Shows, one Charity Golf Tournament, and six Town Halls, there's plenty for AAHOA Members to do.

AAHOA's 2023 Town Hall meetings have been extremely successful and well-attended thus far, underscoring how important it is to host Town Halls across the country.

AAHOA's Town Hall meetings are local meetings for AAHOA Members to meet their Regional Directors, ask questions, voice opinions, and discuss specific upcoming issues or concerns. They provide a great opportunity to meet and network with local hoteliers while learning about the latest issues affecting each region in an intimate setting.

All hoteliers are invited to attend - in fact, many actually join AAHOA as Hotelier Members during these events, so be sure to invite hoteliers from your area that might benefit from AAHOA's offerings.

AAHOA Advocacy in Action
Hotel housekeepers, bellhops, servers, dishwashers, and front desk staff have joined the picket lines in Southern California.

The unionized workers are using the strike to call for higher wages, limits on their workloads, and financial help with housing needs in one of the most expensive parts of the country, among other things. Their labor contract expired Friday.

The union, UNITE HERE Local 11, is asking hotels for an immediate $5 an hour raise, which amounts to a 20% raise for workers and more increases in subsequent years. The union also wants hotels to implement a 7% surcharge on guest tabs to create a fund specifically to address workers' housing needs.

In May, AAHOA joined industry partners to sign a letter from the Chamber of Commerce to the Economic Community Development committee. In the letter, AAHOA asked the committee to transfer the minimum wage hike ordinance to the Trade, Travel, and Tourism Committee. The association also asked the Economic Community Development committee to utilize a third-party consultant to conduct an economic study to ensure that all economic implications of the wage hike initiative are evaluated. AAHOA also continues to advocate for a carve-out for smaller hotels; a carve-out would exclude small hoteliers from implementing the wage hike at their properties.

Last month, AAHOA released an informational video about its 4 Pillars of Franchise Advocacy to advance AAHOA’s mission as the foremost resource and advocate for America’s hotel owners. These 4 Pillars of Franchise Advocacy represent the primary issues for which AAHOA advocates on behalf of member-hoteliers.

The 4 Pillars of Franchise Advocacy are separate from the 12 Points of Fair Franchising. The 12 Points is an educational primer, while the 4 Pillars relate to AAHOA advocacy - the issues we know are most important to hoteliers.

The 4 Core Pillars:
  1. Mandated Vendors: Brands should not mandate specific vendors when there are multiple vendors selling goods of comparable quality at comparable prices.
  2. Rebates: Brands should disclose all vendor "rebates," which can also be called "discounts," "refunds," or "allowances," and should be returned to Franchisees through appropriate accounts.
  3. Loyalty Programs: Brands should reasonably compensate Franchisees when the brand sells loyalty points for cash and then allows travelers to stay at hotels owned by Franchisees.
  4. New Fees: Brands should not unilaterally or arbitrarily impose new fees on Franchisees that were not disclosed in the official Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) without the approval of the Franchisees or a properly elected Franchise Advisory Council (FAC).

"I would say the best thing you can do while you're young is to learn from others in the industry and be engaged in the local community. If you act like a sponge and absorb all the knowledge from others' experiences and pay attention to where your business community is going, then you will be able to make better-informed decisions to keep your business successful."
