PRESS RELEASE: AAHOA Urges Vigilance Amid Ongoing Cyberattacks on Hospitality Industry
  
As the largest hotel owners’ association in the country, AAHOA, the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, called for ensuring cybersecurity measures are in place at hotels to prevent malicious activities like the cyberattack recently experienced by casino giants MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment.

Following a ransomware attack on IHG Hotels & Resorts last year that cost hotel owners between $30,000 and $75,000 each, AAHOA called for clear lines of communication to protect franchisees who bore the brunt of revenue losses from bookings missed due to the disruptions. And in July, Choice Hotels International confirmed that guest data from its Radisson Hotels Americas chain was compromised as part of a file-transfer system hack.
 
Most of these franchisees impacted by the cyberattacks are small business owners who cannot afford to write off unexpected losses in bookings, especially as they struggle to overcome long-standing issues like staffing shortages.

Recap: GHLA Savannah Lodging Market Forecast
The AAHOA Government Affairs team attended the Georgia Hotel Lodging Association (GHLA) Savannah Lodging Market Forecast on Monday, September 25, and Tuesday, September 26, in Savannah, Georgia.
 
Some of the highlights from the event include:
  • AAHOA was acknowledged as a new sponsor of the GHLA Savannah Lodging Market Forecast
  • GHLA unveiled a job board where hoteliers can post new jobs
  • Hoteliers are starting to receive funds from a $150 million dollar grant

AAHOA Calls for Enforcement of Short-Term Rental Oversight in Los Angeles

AAHOA, the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, the largest hotel owners association in the nation representing 20,000 hoteliers, called for stronger enforcement of short-term rentals in Los Angeles, Calif., in response to a report that Airbnb profits are soaring despite regulations meant to curb illegal listings.

The number of short-term rental listings in Los Angeles has dropped since the city's 2019 Home-Sharing Ordinance went into effect, which requires residents to register their homes with the city in order to list them as short-term rentals. Residents are also restricted to listing only their primary residences. But numerous
illegal listings remain, and hosts are charging higher rates than ever.

AAHOA strongly supports oversight of short-term rentals, including in Arkansas, where AAHOA Members fought legislation that would have prevented local governments from enacting reasonable regulations, and in New York City, where short-term rental hosts must now register with the city to rent their homes or face hefty fines.

Lodging: U.S. RevPAR +1% y/y Last Week, +15% vs. 2019. Tough Sunday Comp Due to Rosh Hashanah
  
Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was +1.2% y/y for the week ending 9/23/2023, per STR, above the prior week's result of +0.1%, and slightly below the trailing 10-week average of +1.5%. Versus 2019, RevPAR was +15.4%, above the prior week’s result of +12.8% and above the trailing 10-week average of +13.4%. Last week's results were affected by the timing of the High Holidays, primarily Rosh Hashanah. Sunday RevPAR was -6% y/y vs. Monday +0.6% and Tuesday/ Wednesday +3-4%. While we assume some lost demand last week due to the holidays, midweek performance was relatively decent all things considered. Upscale RevPAR: +4.2% y/y and +11.7% vs. 2019; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +1.8% y/y and +15.3% vs. 2019.”
