AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel interviewed top Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy yesterday during the first AAHOA 2024 Presidential Candidate Forum in its series.
Like many of AAHOA’s Members, Ramaswamy is a first-generation American and understands the complexities of the American Dream.
Ramaswamy talked about how his parents, who emigrated from Southern India, had gone on to live the full American Dream as AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel has, and as so many AAHOA Members have. He talked about raising his sons in Ohio and his hope to provide for them the same way his parents provided for him. But he expressed concerns:
“I am worried that the American Dream that we talked about, that idea that you get ahead through your own hard work, and commitment and dedication, meritocracy that you get ahead, not in the color of your skin, but on the content of your character, and your contributions; that American Dream isn't going to exist for our sons, our kids in their generation, unless we all do something about it.”
Ramaswamy went on to say, “We might think that politics, government – that's somebody else's problem, that I'm not interested in politics, well, you might not be interested in politics, but politics is interested in you. And that's the lesson we've learned, you might not be interested in the government, but the government is interested in you, and will stop you and your kids from achieving that American Dream, from living according to principles of merit and meritocracy, unless we all step up and do our part.”
The virtual forum gave AAHOA Members and other viewers an opportunity to hear directly from Ramaswamy regarding his policy priorities, his vision for the future of America, and the impact of Asian Americans in the hospitality industry.
“Vivek Ramaswamy’s decision to engage with AAHOA and address our members directly underscores the critical role our industry plays on our nation’s economy,” said AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel. “It was an honor to be able to sit down with Vivek to represent AAHOA Members, who contribute 1.7% to the U.S. GDP, provide more than 1 million jobs, and serve as an engine for economic growth in communities across the U.S. It's exciting to see a presidential candidate recognize the immense impact AAHOA Members have not only as everyday constituents but also entrepreneurs and small business owners who power this great country's hospitality industry."

Join this webinar to learn how new, continuous reporting obligations will affect over 30 million businesses in the United States, including yours. Congress has enacted the Corporate Transparency Act of 2024 to increase transparency and accountability in the reporting of everyone who benefits from ownership in a corporate entity. Company ownership and financial structures are more complex and connected than ever before. This can lead to illegal financial activities, like money laundering, tax evasion, and fraud. Simply put, the new legislation requires businesses to report who their beneficial owners are. The new legislation goes into effect on January 1, 2024, and there can be significant consequences for not reporting. Take advantage of this webinar and learn how new reporting rules will affect your hotel(s) and other businesses.

Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was +5.2% y/y for the week ending 10/7/2023, per STR, slightly below the prior week's result of +5.4%, but above the trailing 10-week average of +2.1%. Versus 2019, RevPAR was +18.4%, slightly below the prior week’s result of +18.7% but above the trailing 10-week average of +14.2%. Last week had an easy comp due to the timing of the Jewish High Holidays (as expected). Group demand was unsurprisingly up y/y. Early weekend demand for Indigenous Peoples' Day (which was a clean comp for 2019/2022/2023) appeared soft to us, mostly on lower-rated chain scale occupancy with Midscale -3% and Economy -4% for Friday/Saturday. Upscale RevPAR: +6.9% y/y and +11.9% vs. 2019; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +0.9% y/y and +13.9% vs. 2019.”
