On Saturday, October 14th, several dedicated AAHOA Members raised $8,500 to support Team Payal's Smile. This initiative, held in memory of AAHOA Member Montu Patel's sister, Payal Patel, who tragically lost her battle with brain cancer, took place during the National Brain Tumor Society’s Fourth Annual Race for Hope 5k Walk/Run in Philadelphia, PA.

The participation of AAHOA Members exemplified the strength that the community can bring to charitable endeavors.

The National Brain Tumor Society is committed to conquering and curing brain tumors. The organization is also the largest patient advocacy program in the U.S. committed to curing brain tumors.

Montu Patel, a dedicated AAHOA Member and the driving force behind Payal's Smile team, expressed the significance of raising awareness and research funds.

"You wouldn't believe how small the charity is but how large of an impact it has in D.C., and how instrumental it is to get research funding to help find treatment options for brain cancer and different types of brain tumors,” Patel said. “The same standard of care that was there 30 or 40 years ago is the exact same standard of care that is there today. Almost every other type of cancer has advanced in its standard of care, but brain cancer has not hit those same stepping stones of discovery and the new standard of care to help patients have a better and longer quality of life."

On Friday, October 13, AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel addressed a group of students enrolled in the Hotel Management class at the University of South Carolina (USC). This presentation marked a unique and significant opportunity for aspiring young professionals to gain insights from a seasoned industry expert.

During his presentation, Patel delved into the significance of AAHOA, shedding light on the remarkable work the association has accomplished on a national, state, and local level. This opened students' eyes to the game-changing initiatives shaping the hospitality industry while emphasizing AAHOA's pivotal role in driving progress forward.

One of the highlights of Patel's presentation was his guidance on how students could enhance their marketability in the hospitality job market. His invaluable insight provided students with a roadmap for pursuing a successful career in the field.

“You can start your journey in a number of ways. One is learning the metrics and figuring out the capital statistics,” Patel shared. “This is one of the industries where you can move up and eventually become the owner or CEO. The key thing here is hospitality.”

AAHOA Advocacy in Action
Rising U.S. Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy spoke yesterday to AAHOA (Asian American Hotel Owners Association) Board Chairman Bharat Patel about key industry issues during the first AAHOA 2024 Presidential Candidate Forum.

The exclusive interview with top contender Ramaswamy was the first-ever opportunity for AAHOA to speak on behalf of the industry with a leading Presidential candidate. Like many of AAHOA’s Members, Ramaswamy is a first-generation American who understands the complexities of the American Dream.
Ramaswamy discussed how his parents, who emigrated from India, had made sacrifices and worked hard to fulfill the full American dream, similar to what AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel and so many AAHOA Members have done over the years.

Ramaswamy talked personally about raising his sons in Ohio and his hope to provide for them the same way his parents provided for him. The virtual forum gave AAHOA Members and other viewers an opportunity to hear directly from Ramaswamy regarding his policy priorities, his vision for the future of America, and the impact of Asian Americans in the hospitality industry.

“Ramaswamy’s decision to engage with AAHOA Members directly underscores the critical role our industry plays on our nation’s economy,” said AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel. “It was an honor to be able to sit down with Ramaswamy to represent AAHOA Members. It's exciting to see a presidential candidate recognize the immense impact AAHOA Members have as everyday constituents, but also as enterprising entrepreneurs and small business owners who power this great country's hospitality industry."

On Friday, September 29, Gulf Regional Director Vimal Patel, alongside a group of local AAHOA Members, convened with Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy. During the meeting, a variety of issues took center stage, including the need to increase the Small Business Administration (SBA) Loan amounts, the labor shortage, credit card ‘swipe fees,’ and the future of the franchising model in the U.S.

This important meeting allowed local AAHOA Members to share their insights, concerns, and potential solutions directly with their state senator. In particular, the call for an increase in SBA Loan amounts garnered attention as it plays a pivotal role in sustaining hotel businesses. SBA 7(a) and 504 loans are currently capped at $5 million, which was last set in 2010. The costs of constructing and purchasing properties have skyrocketed over the past decade for hoteliers.

The meeting with Sen. Cassidy served as a testament to the cooperative spirit of addressing crucial issues and ensuring the prosperity of the industry in the Gulf region and beyond. AAHOA is grateful to the senator for his invaluable time and willingness to meet with local hoteliers.

The government is demanding your information!
Join this webinar to learn how new, continuous reporting obligations will affect over 30 million businesses in the United States, including yours. Congress has enacted the Corporate Transparency Act of 2024 to increase transparency and accountability in the reporting of everyone who benefits from ownership in a corporate entity. Company ownership and financial structures are more complex and connected than ever before. This can lead to illegal financial activities, like money laundering, tax evasion, and fraud. Simply put, the new legislation requires businesses to report who their beneficial owners are. The new legislation goes into effect on January 1, 2024, and there can be significant consequences for not reporting. Take advantage of this webinar and learn how new reporting rules will affect your hotel(s) and other businesses.

Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was +0.8% y/y for the week ending 10/14/2023, per STR, below the prior week's result of +5.2%, and below the trailing 10-week average of +2.1%. Versus 2019, RevPAR was +13.5%, below the prior week’s result of +18.4%, and below the trailing 10-week average of +14.6%. Last week was a continuation of a tough comp due to the holiday shift of Yom Kippur (for the comparable week in 2022 of Oct 9-15, Group RevPAR was +80.6% y/y). We also note softer leisure demand this year on both the Columbus Day and non-holiday weekends. RevPAR y/y was down ~3-4% last Friday/Saturday for Luxury, Resorts, and Economy. Upscale RevPAR: +1.8% y/y and +7.3% vs. 2019; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +0.5% y/y and +14.0% vs. 2019.”
