The final issue of Today's Hotelier magazine for 2023 is officially out!

This month, we turn our focus to the future of the industry, including a look at harnessing the power of technology to predict the trends of tomorrow, moving past the pandemic, and much more. In addition, we have a very special feature with AAHOA Members, Amit and Brittany Patel, who take us through the highs and lows of navigating hotel ownership together.

Read the December issue and get caught up on the latest happenings in AAHOA as we wrap up the year.

In late October, nearly 250 AAHOA Members traveled to Washington, D.C., for another annual installment of AAHOA's Fall National Advocacy Conference (FNAC). Attendance grew by more than double when compared to 2022's figures, and attendees enjoyed several days of conference programming while also getting the invaluable opportunity to meet in person with more than 200 Congressional representatives and staff members.

AAHOA's Fall and Spring National Advocacy Conferences are crucial to the association's advocacy efforts. Attendees have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with policymakers on both sides of the political aisle to champion the interests of the hospitality industry and ensure America's hotel owners are being fairly represented on the local, state, and national levels.

These conferences are instrumental in shaping the direction of AAHOA's advocacy efforts and contribute to the success of the association's mission to promote and protect the interests of the hospitality industry.

AAHOA Chairman Bharat Patel recently participated in a compelling podcast conversation with Dr. Kamal Morar. They delved into the crucial topic of health, specifically addressing the importance of testing early for metabolic syndrome and heart disease.

Their conversation highlighted the urgency for awareness, especially within the Indian American community. It's vital for everyone to understand their health risks and take proactive steps.

Here's one of the notable quotes from Chairman Patel:
“I recently was in Cincinnati, OH, at an AAHOA regional, and at the regional meeting, we had a guest speaker, Dr. Kamal, who started talking about health. His conversation really impacted me because I had a heart attack in 2019. Dr. Kamal was speaking my language. He shared how we can be health advocates and also lead the association. I think those two things can be combined. They’re not incongruent.”

The overarching message from Chairman Patel was clear – amidst the hustle and bustle of managing hotel properties, owners must not overlook their own well-being. This podcast serves as a vital platform to share this conversation, urging everyone to prioritize their health. Listen to the enlightening discussion and join the effort to spread awareness with your network.

In the Market

Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was -0.8% y/y for the week ending 12/2/2023, per STR, slightly below the prior week's result of -0.6%, and below the trailing 10-week average of +2.7%. Versus 2019, RevPAR was +0.1%, below the prior week’s result of +18.7%, and below the trailing 10-week average of +17.0%.  We have two major takeaways from last week's results.
  1. A potential scenario like in 2022 where there was extended leisure travel (leisure being a relatively underperforming customer segment) into the week following Thanksgiving and subsequently a lower mix of business/group travel (these being outperforming customer segments of late, especially group).
  2. The shift of Art Basel (Miami) by one week, hurting Miami and Luxury results.
Upscale RevPAR: +1.0% y/y and -7.4% vs. 2019; Upper Midscale RevPAR: -1.1% y/y and +3.8% vs. 2019.”
