AAHOA continues to monitor the developments involving the proposed merger by Choice Hotels International (“Choice Hotels”) of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts (“Wyndham”), including a press release issued by Choice Hotels on Monday that proposed a full slate of “independent, highly qualified individuals for election at the 2024 Annual Meeting of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.” The Choice Hotels’ statement listed the nomination of eight individuals, including an AAHOA Lifetime Member.
In addition, a piece published by Reuters on January 22, “Choice Hotels nominates board directors in hostile Wyndham bid,” reported statements from several hospitality leaders in support of the deal, along with a quote attributed to an AAHOA co-founder.
"While we respect opinions and viewpoints from every side of the issue, the individuals nominated by Choice Hotels and quoted by Reuters do not speak for AAHOA, and they do not represent AAHOA’s viewpoint,” said AAHOA President & CEO Laura Lee Blake. “AAHOA remains highly concerned about the significant impact this proposed merger will have on the industry, and we strive to always represent the best interests of our members.”
AAHOA Director of State Government Affairs Western Division Rachel Stone joined former LA Councilmember Joe Buscaino and AAHOA Lifetime Member Mike Patel at the U.S. Conference of Mayors 92nd Winter Conference in Washington, D.C.
Valuable insights and networking opportunities were gained through meetings with mayors from various cities, such as Atlanta, GA; Beverly Hills, CA; and Kansas City, MO. At the Latino Leaders Network Conference, discussions included Walmart's Javier Angulo, Wells Fargo's Alfredo Pedroza, and the Honorable Tom Perez, Senior Advisor to the U.S. President.
Connections were made with American Airlines, tracking the Credit Card Competition Act of 2023. Mayors shared strategies for poverty, family dynamics, and programs like United Way's Income Strained & Employed.
The conference addressed homelessness, mental health, fentanyl crises, and initiatives like Housing First and Project Room Key.
Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted key issues like gun reform and reproductive rights. In conclusion, the Winter 2024 U.S. Conference of Mayors showcased diverse initiatives and discussions, reflecting city leaders' commitment to addressing challenges for a better future.

Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was -2.2% y/y for the week ending 1/20/2024, per STR, below the prior week's result of +3.3% and below the trailing 10-week average of +1.6%. Inclement weather and MLK Day were headwinds to RevPAR growth last week. Due to adverse weather in many of the areas of the U.S., we believe transient travel demand was diminished, with both industry-wide and transient occupancy down ~4% y/y. Upscale RevPAR: -0.7% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: -4.3% y/y.”
