🌟 Exciting news! Rep. Young Kim (CA-40) is the cover feature for the September issue of Today's Hotelier! In this inspiring article, she talks about the importance of diversity in government and her commitment to transparency in the hospitality industry.

Rep. Kim is championing H.R. 6543, the No Hidden Fees on Extra Expenses for Stays (FEES) Act, a bill backed by AAHOA that aims to ensure all short-term lodging providers clearly disclose mandatory fees. She also highlights the vital role hoteliers play in her district's local economies.

"California's hospitality industry is one of the largest in the country and is critical for local economies in my district," she shared.

What Happened: The Los Angeles City Council recognized AAHOA with "AAHOA Day" on Wednesday, September 4, in acknowledgment of the association's pivotal role as entrepreneurs, job creators, and contributors in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

Deeper Dive: AAHOA Members attended a city council meeting where Councilmember John Lee (CD-12) and Councilmember Traci Park (CD-11) introduced AAHOA and paid tribute to the role the area hoteliers have played in the city's development. Park and Lee presented AAHOA with a resolution recognizing the hoteliers' contributions.

Councilmember Paul Krekorian (CD-2) said it was appropriate that the recognition coincided with the city's 243rd birthday.

"It's easy to say 'I love LA and be an LA booster,'" he said. "You came here, worked 12- to 14-hour days to build a business, create savings, and then invested your life savings in the soil we are on….that is how you show you love LA."

AAHOA Advocacy in Action
What's Happening: Ahead of the 2024 AAHOA Fall National Advocacy Conference in Washington, September 18-19, AAHOA is seeking to build momentum on the landmark legislation addressing AAHOA Members needs: the Loans In Our Neighborhoods (LIONS) Act.

Deeper Dive: AAHOA has long advocated for increases to SBA loan limits. We’re pleased to report Congressman Shri Thanedar (D-MI) announced the introduction of the LIONS Act, a bill designed to amend the Small Business Act by increasing the maximum gross loan amount for section 7(a) loans, from $5M to $10M, which would provide greater financial support to small businesses. Furthermore, this bill is bipartisan in that Congressman Mark Alford (R-MO) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) have both supported it.

Thanks to Congressman Thanedar's leadership, this legislation has been referred to the House Small Business Committee, but we also have you to thank; it is because of your persistence, advocacy, and connections with lawmakers to showcase the need for this legislation that we are where we are today.
The August Edition of In Your Corner, AAHOA's advocacy brief designed to keep you informed and engaged with our ongoing efforts to advocate for the hospitality industry, is now available to read.

How AAHOA advocacy protects your profitability

Revenue is more than just a metric – it's the lifeblood that enables us to invest, innovate, and sustain our businesses.

Our industry continues to face significant challenges, most notably in labor and insurance costs. If you’ve been to an AAHOA Hotel Owners Conference & Trade Show this year, you’ve likely heard me address this very thing on the General Session stage.

Recruiting and retaining skilled workers continues to be increasingly difficult, with competitive wages putting pressure on our budgets. Insurance costs continue to soar, further straining our financial resources.

Given these challenges, we must adopt innovative strategies to maintain and grow our revenue and ensure the sustainability of our industry. AAHOA’s advocacy efforts aim to protect the businesses of AAHOA Members and push forward industry-friendly legislation that reduces red tape, levels the playing field, and ensures the long-term health of our industry. So much of the work AAHOA is doing in Washington is to protect the bottom lines of AAHOA Members.
