HerOwnership
National Women's Small Business Month is celebrated every October to recognize women-owned businesses and their contributions to the economy. The month also aims to encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship.

Fun Facts:
  • The month of October was chosen to commemorate the signing of the Women's Business Ownership Act in 1988. Before this act, women needed a male relative to co-sign their business loan applications.
  • The number of women-owned businesses in the U.S. has grown exponentially since 1972, when there were just over 400,000. Today, there are more than 13 million women-owned businesses in the U.S.
  • The Small Business Administration (SBA) offers resources for women entrepreneurs, including the ability to apply for and maintain certification as a women-owned business.
AAHOA's HerOwnership Initiative aims to uplift, empower, and educate women in hospitality and give them the confidence to pursue hotel ownership. Let's continue to encourage women in all industries to follow their dreams of entrepreneurship!

Today's Hotelier

Shattering the glass ceiling

Women in the hospitality industry comprise most of the workforce. They're the backbone of our families and our industry. Today, they represent 51.2% of the industry – quite a leap from 1980 when women held a minority of management roles. This progress is a testament to women’s hard work and resilience in our industry and should give us all a reason to feel proud and hopeful about the future.

That said, there remains much to be done. Studies show hotels with women in ownership roles outperform the brand average RevPAR index by 5%. This data highlights the positive impact of female leadership on business performance and should drive us to continue supporting and promoting women into leadership positions.

As Truist Securities wrote, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was +10.2% y/y for the week ending 9/28/2024, per STR/ CoStar, above the prior week's result of +2.5% y/y and above the trailing 10-week average of +1.9%. Last week's results benefited from an easy y/y comparison due to the holiday shift of Yom Kippur, which took place on Sunday 9/24 - Monday 9/25 last year. Yom Kippur takes place on Friday 10/11 - Saturday 10/12 this year and will make for a more difficult y/y comparison at that time. Upscale RevPAR: +10.3% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +6.6% y/y.”
