What's Happening: From Hollywood to Capitol Hill, the influence of Indian Americans is stronger than ever! This vibrant community has brought unique perspectives to the U.S., and their contributions are reshaping the landscape in politics, entertainment, and hospitality.

Deeper Dive: Around 60% of America’s hotels are owned by Indian Americans, with many moving into executive roles in major hotel chains. In the November issue of Asian Hospitality magazine, Lina Patel, former AAHOA Women Hoteliers Director Eastern Division (2017-2023), highlights the values that drive their success: hard work, entrepreneurship, and family.

Giving Back: Additionally, Lina recently traveled to Nepal in partnership with Red Roof Inn and the AAHOA Charitable Foundation, making a meaningful impact at Hillary School, one of the highest-altitude schools in Nepal. Lina and her team delivered backpacks filled with educational supplies to the children and teachers who will benefit from them for years to come. Patel, a member of AAHOA’s Independent Hoteliers Committee, said independent properties can establish unique identities in competitive markets by leveraging their location. Whether you’re marketing a fisherman’s paradise or the closest hotel to a theme park, location is a key selling point for independent properties, he said.

As Truist Securities wrote, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was -3.5% y/y for the week ending 11/9/2024, per STR/CoStar, below the prior week's result of +3.1% y/y and below the trailing 10-week average of +1.5%. As expected, there was soft business travel (particularly Group) during election week. Group RevPAR was -14.5% y/y last week which comps against what is normally a decent group week of early November. Some corporate offices were closed in anticipation of potential uncertainty around election results/protests. RevPAR declines were pronounced on Monday and Tuesday of around -13% to -14% y/y. Hoteliers expect recovering business travel for the rest of 4Q ex-holidays. Upscale RevPAR: -5.8% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: -1.2% y/y.”
