SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Luxury (+5.2%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Upscale and Midscale were the weakest at +1.2%. Upper Midscale (+2.0%) underperformed the industry average. We believe two factors particularly impacted last week's relatively strong Group performance, leading to Luxury and Upper Upscale outperformance within the chain scales. First is the Chanukah calendar shift. In 2018, the first night of the holiday started on Sunday, December 2nd. We believe some groups may have shifted away from the holiday week as a result. Note: Chanukah began on Tuesday, December 12th last year. The second factor is an arguably easy Group comp given Group was -4.3% in the same week on the prior year. We add that Group was +4.7% for the week ending 11/24/18 on what was also an easy Group comp (vs. -5.0% for the week ending 11/25/17).” For more, read the full report.

Time is running out if Congress wants to prevent a government shutdown on December 7, when the current funding stream lapses for much of the government. House and Senate appropriators have proposed modest increases for the National Park Service, but that matters little if the measures stall. (Source: National Parks Traveler)

The next big disruptor in hospitality, according to Ian Schrager, is co-living spaces. “Communal living is blurring the distinction between residential and hotels,” the hotelier and Studio 54 co-founder argued during Bloomberg’s Year Ahead: Luxury conference in Manhattan. The mastermind behind the Public Hotel urged audiences to look at millennial buying statistics as evidence of this trend. (Source: National Real Estate Investor)
