Human trafficking is a huge problem for the hospitality industry. The International Labour Organization estimates that there are more than 40.3 million victims of human trafficking, and because of the anonymity they offer, hotels and motels are the ideal environment for traffickers to conduct their business. AAHOA is helping to lead the charge to change that. Hotel Business magazine showcased AAHOA’s efforts to end this scourge against humanity and share what hoteliers can do to stop it. Read the response here.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Upper Upscale (+9.8%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Midscale was the weakest at -3.0%. Upper Midscale (+1.8%) performed similar to the industry average. As we expected, last week's results showed very strong Group results due to the Easter calendar shift. We believe transient leisure was weak given the comparison against Passover/Easter on the y/y comp; however, we believe corporate demand was strong, especially Group (RevPAR: +45.0%; Occupancy: +34.9%). We also saw skewed results in select leisure markets: Miami RevPAR was -18.0%, Orlando was -6.3%, and Oahu was -7.2%. Given the calendar shift fundamentals, Upper Upscale was strong at +9.8%, whereas leisure focused chain scales underperformed (impacting in particularly the highest- and lowest-rated hotels).” For more, read the full report. Hoteliers in downtown Detroit are experiencing near-record-high occupancy and nightly rates. That’s a stark change from only a decade ago, when hoteliers struggled to fill even half of their empty rooms. But as the city increases the number of small and midsize hotels, the industry is facing a new challenge: How do they keep track of all the new hotels?

One of the key findings of the Young Hoteliers Summit Employer Rankings 2019 Key is that young hospitality students are motivated to work in traditional hospitality when they graduate. There was indecision as to which sector they wanted to work in, but most also reported they wanted to remain in their first role rather than change in a year.
