SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Upper Midscale (+0.3%) was the strongest/only positive chain scale for branded hotels; Economy was the weakest at -1.0%. Midscale (-0.4%) underperformed the industry average. Back to a more run-rate trend, last week's relatively clean-comp results presented flattish RevPAR. Results were largely similar across the chain scales, with Upper Midscale the only relatively positive performer; other chain scales and Independents were flat to -1%. Transient and Group RevPARs were very similar and also down about -1%.” For more, read the full report.

The first step in fighting human trafficking is understanding why hotels are vulnerable to the crime. Then, training is crucial. Train hotel staff to notice the signs of human trafficking and what to do in the event a situation arises, but make sure managers are trained in how to lead the staff in the situation as well.

The Urban Land Institute produced a report showing that sustainable programs and initiatives add value to hotel properties and provide a competitive edge in the market. Properties such as the Ambrose Hotel in Santa Monica, CA, and the Phoenician in Scottsdale, AZ, have begun making major sustainable renovations and expect to see a large return on the investment.
