In addition, Chairwoman Jagruti Panwala, Vice Chairman Biran Patel, and Secretary Nishant (Neal) Patel were on hand to give the AAHOA update and talk to attendees about issues that matter. Sunday evening in Portland, more than 40 women attended the Women Hoteliers Networking Reception, where they discussed, in great detail, topics such as succession planning, benefits of AAHOA engagement, and employee retention.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Upper Upscale (+0.5%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Luxury was the weakest at -3.6%. Upper Midscale (-1.5%) and Midscale (-2.3%) underperformed the industry average. In a continuation of trends over the past several weeks, overall RevPAR was flattish to slightly down although the headline national RevPAR of -0.6% was bolstered by relative strength in Upper Upscale (likely Group related) and Independents (+0.9%). Ex-independents, national RevPAR would have been down more than 1%. More concerning to us is the more-recent trend of ADR growth being negative in the chain scales (all were down except Upper Upscale last week).” For more, read the full report.

Two big talking points at this year's Hotel Data Conference were an upcoming industry recession and labor. During the "Wine" Down with the Bosses session, Mike Deitemeyer, Interstate Hotels & Resorts president and CEO, said the industry must focus on ways to keep qualified talent. “It’s about bringing energy and enthusiasm to the space,” he said. “It’s about inclusion and fun. We work hard, and we play hard.”

It's a common thought that smell is the most powerful of all five senses, which is why hoteliers are implementing scents throughout their properties with the following goals: creating ambiance to elevate guest experience, enhancing brand experience, and evoking a particular atmosphere by using location-specific scents.
