Chairwoman Jagruti Panwala, Vice Chairman Biran Patel, Treasurer Vinay Patel, Secretary Nishant (Neal) Patel, and Interim President & CEO Rachel Humphrey will be featured speakers in the event, to be held September 23-26 in Phoeniz, AZ. With Hurricane Dorian once again strengthening and threatening the coastal U.S., price-gouging laws are likely to go into effect in many states. With that in mind, AAHOA reminds all hotel owners that price gouging is illegal, whether intentional or not, and could be linked to booking technology. For those who own properties in states that may be affected by the storm, protect yourselves by learning the price-gouging laws in that state and monitoring prices via your booking software and override as needed.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey reports, “Upper Upscale (+3.1%) was the strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Economy was the weakest at -1.0%. Upper Midscale (+0.1%) and Midscale (-0.4%) underperformed the industry average. Group RevPAR was quite strong at +6.2% vs. Transient of +1.1%. San Francisco had an exceptional Group week (Group RevPAR was +172.4%, largely occupancy driven). Given San Francisco's high overall room rates, we believe the market's strength lifted the national headline results. Conversely, impact from Hurricane Dorian was evident in the Florida results. Miami, Orlando, and Tampa noted double digit y/y occupancy declines by the end of the week (Miami occupancy was -38.6% on Saturday, Orlando was -41.9%, and Tampa was -14.7%).” For more, read the full report.

With an industry-wide labor shortage, keeping great employees is at the front of every hotelier's mind. One of the ways that hotel owners and managers can do this is by giving employees access to technology that helps the employees do their jobs better. When technology is helpful, easy to learn, and actually works well, you're more likely to keep the employees making your business better.

At Hotel Data Conference, STR's Raquel Ortiz spoke on the relationship between labor costs and profitability.
