AAHOA President & CEO Cecil P. Staton issued a statement this week in response to the breakdown of stimulus negotiations: “The breakdown of the negotiations over the next round of economic stimulus represents the absolute dysfunction of our government. Millions of Americans remain out of work. Tens of thousands of small businesses need a lifeline to survive this pandemic and need real relief now. Americans deserve a government that will not forestall vital economic stimulus to score cheap political points. The future of countless small businesses and the millions of jobs they create is at stake. America’s hotel owners call on our elected leaders to negotiate in good faith and broker a deal as soon as possible to help small businesses keep the lights on.”

Truist Securities (formerly SunTrust Robinson Humphrey) reports, “Economy (-15.6%) was the relatively strongest chain scale for branded hotels; Upper Upscale was the weakest at -72.4%. Upscale (-53.7%) underperformed the industry average; Upper Midscale (-38.5%) outperformed. Last week's results were impacted by the High Holidays calendar shift (2020: Sunday/Monday Yom Kippur vs. 2019: Sunday-Tuesday Rosh Hashanah). Last week's results were sequentially stronger than recent weeks, driven by the holidays shifting. We still do not see a material improvement in corporate travel. We anticipate another relatively easy comp in this week's results (week ending 9/10/20) with Yom Kippur in midweek for 2019 vs. no holiday in 2020.”

Technology has had a huge impact in how we communicate during COVID-19 and hotels are no exception to this. With increased concern in limiting time spent face to face, there are ways to use chatbots to enhance the guest experience.
Months into the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen an increased number of remote workers. In order to battle higher-than-normal vacancies, hoteliers have had to get creative with how they utilize their properties, particularly by catering to remote work guests.
COVID-19 has changed the game for the hotel industry. But as Maze Hospitality’s Robert Swade points out, “The hotel has never been a concept with fixed boundaries.” In a time of industry-wide uncertainty, there is a glimpse of optimism as hoteliers take this time to innovate.
