AAHOA has been especially busy on the advocacy front recently, joining forces with coalitions advocating for policies and laws beneficial to the hospitality industry. We joined hundreds of other organizations in penning a letter to the Department of Labor and Homeland Security urging strong support for the H-2B visa program. AAHOA and dozens of coalition partners also penned a letter to Congressional leadership regarding a broad tax proposal that would increase the reporting threshold of the IRS. Finally, we partnered with more than 30 other organizations in signing a letter to the House Ways & Means Committee and the Senate Committee on Finance regarding the Small Business Tax Fairness Act ( S.2387) and proposals to change the 199A deduction. AAHOA will continue to advocate on behalf of our members and the industry as a whole as recovery from the effects of the ongoing pandemic continues.

Truist Securities (formerly SunTrust Robinson Humphrey) reports, “Last week’s RevPAR was up against a -50.3% comparable result in 2020 vs. -47.5% in the prior week’s 2-year run-rate. On a 2-year run-rate, RevPAR was -11.3% vs. -7.4% in the prior week’s 2-year run-rate. Upscale RevPAR: +82.4% y/y and -19.0% over 2 years; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +61.1% y/y and -3.0% over 2 years. The overall theme of the results remains ”limited service hotels have never had it better,” whereas “urban full service remains very depressed.” Tellingly, group occupancy was -43.1% vs. the same week in 2019. While individual hotel performance may vary from STR results, we do not see clear evidence on a macro national basis for a robust return of large corporate group demand in 4Q21.”

As many investors can attest, a down or recovering market can offer opportunities otherwise difficult to find in a stronger economy. Here are several opportunities for new and established hoteliers to secure financing for a project.
Construction of new hotels is presently down by 48,000 rooms when compared against an all-time high of 220,207 rooms in April 2020, according to data from STR. Given the pandemic's effects on the industry, this is an understandable slowdown, but larger cities can expect to see a supply surge in the coming months as long-planned projects open.
As hoteliers continue their rebuilding and recovery efforts throughout the pandemic's various stages, there are a few key practices that could prove to be a boon for struggling properties as they seek to attract and impress guests.
