Today marks the beginning of Diwali, the Festival of Lights. One of the holiday's main tenets – the celebration of light over darkness – could not be more apropos. For the past nearly two years, we have struggled to overcome the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the hospitality industry being hit especially hard. These have been some of the darkest times in the history of our industry, but thankfully, we are starting to see glimmers of light at the end of the tunnel. Diwali marks a time for all of us to reflect on ways we can uplift others and shine light into the world. It is a time to celebrate and appreciate the past and prepare for the future. From our family to yours, we wish you all the best this holiday season.

Truist Securities (formerly SunTrust Robinson Humphrey) reports, “Last week’s RevPAR was up against a -48.4% comparable result in 2020 vs. -51.8% in the prior week’s 2-year run-rate. On a 2-year run-rate, RevPAR was -4.3% vs. -9.6% in the prior week’s 2-year run-rate. Upscale RevPAR: +86.2% y/y and -11.6% over 2 years; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +64.3% y/y and +3.4% over 2 years. Last week's results were impacted by the shift of Halloween. The impact vs. 2019 was not as frightening with group occupancy down 31% last week vs. 38% over the running 28 day average. Day-by-day results vs. 2019 had more "tricks" than "treats" in analysis with Monday RevPAR down 21%, Thursday up 15%, and then Saturday down 4%. We await a smoother comparison for analysis in the next few weeks.”

While gas prices are continuing to rise, they are showing signs of slowing, with the week-over-week last week marking the smallest increase in more than a month. AAA attributes the trend to a possible reintroduction of Iranian oil as a contributing factor, and retailers across the country are hoping less pain at the pump will lead to increased spending elsewhere, including travel.
