On Thursday, May 19, AAHOA President and CEO Laura Lee Blake and Keith Miller, of Franchisee Advocacy Consulting, both testified on key franchise issues before the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). One of the key roles of the FTC is protecting American consumers. At the virtual open commission meeting, Blake and Miller both spoke about the nuances of the franchisee and franchisor relationship and the many unfair practices in the franchising industry, especially for hoteliers. They both raised concerns that AAHOA Members have brought to their attention, concerns that they say have gotten increasingly worse in recent years.
One of those concerns is “preferred” vendor mandates imposed on the franchisees, and the franchisors’ receipt of rebates, commissions, kickbacks, services, or other considerations from these vendors without fully disclosing them to the franchisees.

AAHOA Lifetime Member and former Board Member Pratik Bhakta has won the GOP primary for NC House District 115. Though initial counts resulted in a tie, a hand-eye recount led to him gaining one vote.
Bhakta was born in India and immigrated to the U.S. when he was only six years old. Although he didn’t speak English when he first moved to the U.S., he quickly learned the language thanks to his father's encouragement to make education a top priority. Fast forward to the future, and Bhakta has a Bachelor of Science degree from NC State University, over 25 years of hospitality experience under his belt, and won the race for Republican primary for NC House District 115.
Through his various roles at AAHOA and involvement with other industry associations, Bhakta has seen first-hand the difference playing an active role in local advocacy work makes in the day-to-day lives of small business owners. In North Carolina, AAHOA Members own 67.7% of the hotels and contribute $9.3 billion to the state’s GDP. As a fierce advocate of AAHOA and the industry, we know Bhakta’s forward-thinking approach will help small business owners and the NC community thrive. AAHOA congratulates Bhakta on an excellent campaign and a well-deserved win!
AAHOA Treasurer Miraj S. Patel was recently interviewed by Sachinsingh Tomar, a graduate student at the University of Houston, about AAHOA and the hotel industry at large. Gaining insights from experienced hoteliers, like Patel, goes a long way in helping students launch a career in this field after graduation.
As a second-generation hotelier, Patel’s exposure to hospitality can be traced back to his family’s first 30-room independent hotel property. Since then, he’s seen the industry adopt technological advances, embrace new customer expectations, steadily recover from the global pandemic, and open the door for people from diverse backgrounds.
On Tuesday, June 7, AAHOA hosted its second Charity Golf Tournament in Albuquerque, NM, at the beautiful University of New Mexico Golf Course. We were joined by AAHOA Secretary Kamalesh (KP) Patel, Southwest Regional Director Dharmesh Ahir, and some of the Southwest Ambassadors as they came together to represent the Southwest Region.
Thankfully, we had great weather, hosted 60 players, and raised approximately $55,000! Thank you to the AAHOA Members who came out to play, as well as all of our sponsors for helping us put this event together and enjoy the beautiful day of golf, networking, and raising money for some great causes.
If you didn't make it to the first two, we have three more charity golf tournaments on the calendar. To get more information and register, visit aahoa.com/events-education/golf. We hope to see you at one of our remaining charity golf tournaments this summer!
Since its inception, AAHOA has fought for equitable policies to open the door for hotel owners from diverse backgrounds, including women. That’s why industry veteran David Kong’s work championing diversity, inclusion, and equity is vital to AAHOA’s overall mission. Kong launched DEI Advisors, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping women and other minority groups to achieve their career aspirations.
It is also worth noting that former Executive Vice President and COO for AAHOA, Rachel Humphrey, is one of the principals at DEI Advisors – this goes to show that current and former AAHOA Members and staff are in full support of what this company tries to achieve for our diverse industry.

Truist Securities reports, “Last week’s RevPAR was up against a +127.4% comparable result in 2021 vs. +147.5% in the prior week. On a 3-year run-rate (vs. 2019), RevPAR was -2.2% vs. +26.2% in the prior week’s 3-year run-rate. Last week's results were softer (vs. 2019) due to the Memorial Day calendar shift.
