Hurricane season 2022 started June 1 and runs through November 30. As we enter the peak of hurricane season in August, hotel owners need to have a plan and be prepared. Hotel properties in vulnerable coastline regions can face high winds, storm surge flooding, heavy rainfall, structural damage, and much more if and when a hurricane makes landfall.

Vimal Patel, AAHOA Lifetime Member and QHotels Management CEO, recounts his experience reopening his hotel after Hurricane Ida damaged his hotel property.

"We got affected with the wind damange and flooding. And a substantial amount of roof damage because the water came from the roof and damaged the building from the top down. It took a long time to assess the damage and get the mitigation work started," Vimal said.

The aftermath of a hurricane can cause so much uncertainty and business interruptions. So, what steps can hotel owners take to prepare for potential hurricane damage to their businesses? Watch this informational video where Vimal Patel, AAHOA Lifetime Member and QHotels Management CEO, and John W. Houghtaling, II from AAHOA Club Blue Industry Partner Gauthier Murphy & Houghtaling, share insights on navigating insurance claims, assessing property damage, and using AAHOA as a resource after a hurricane.

This week, the U.S. Travel Association said goodbye to Roger Dow, who stepped down from his role as President and CEO after 17 years.

Travel is an integral part of the American experience, and the pro-growth and pro-traveler work Roger achieved during his time at the U.S. Travel Association helped many AAHOA Members take their hotel business to the next level.

Roger’s leadership, complemented by an abiding sense of optimism, was essential in guiding the industry through numerous challenges over the years, from the post-9/11 travel slump to the COVID-19 pandemic. Roger was a steady voice of resilience in each of these moments, none more so than by rallying the industry to ensure all sectors of travel received the necessary relief to survive the pandemic and keep workers on payrolls. His role in reopening international inbound air travel and repealing the pre-departure COVID testing requirement was a turning point in the industry’s recovery.

The AAHOA Community wishes Roger all the best in his next chapter and thanks him for all he has done for our industry! Read the full tribute to Roger Dow and gain more insight into his incredible contributions to the hospitality industry.

Truist Securities reports, “Last week’s RevPAR was up against a +102.9% comparable result in 2021 vs. +110.0% in the prior week. On a 3-year run-rate (vs. 2019), RevPAR was +13.9% vs. +9.3% in the prior week’s 3-year run-rate. Upscale RevPAR: +19.4 y/y and +9.0% over 3 years; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +9.0% y/y and +14.3 over 3 years. We continue to observe the upper-end outperforming the lower, likely due to the return of business and group travel to these segments whereas the lower-end chain scales, while still significantly performing above 2019 levels, have difficult y/y leisure comps. Additionally, we continue to observe some of last year’s “hot” leisure markets, especially those in Florida, showing some of the weakest results of the top-25 markets, notably Miami -1.6% y/y and Tampa +3.3% y/y.”
