Hurricane Ian made landfall as a category four storm in Florida on Wednesday, September 28, causing widespread flooding, tree damage, and power outages, impacting families and businesses. Many AAHOA-owned hotels are recovering from this catastrophic storm, such as the hotels of AAHOA Lifetime Member Jan Gautam.
Gautam, President & CEO of IHRMC Hotels & Resorts in Orlando, FL, shared that seven of his hotel properties suffered wind and water intrusion when Hurricane Ian hit the Orlando area as a category one. “This particular hurricane was supposed to hit Tampa Bay and we were not expecting it to come towards us in Orlando,” Gautam said. “Suddenly, at the last moment the route was changed and most of the people from the Tampa area were staying in Orlando, so hotels in Orlando were completely full. These were the people who came from central Florida and we were actually beaten up badly.”
The AAHOA community is continuing to assist members and hoteliers as they navigate this difficult situation.

Last month, a cyberattack significantly disrupted IHG's (InterContinental Hotels Group) booking channels, internal systems, and Reservations & Customer Care (RCC) call centres. This unauthorized activity caused a loss of income, a class-action lawsuit, and many frustrated customers and franchisees, many of which are AAHOA Members.
You can help us better understand how the cyberattack affected your IHG properties and the extent of the business damage. The deadline to participate in our brief survey has been extended to Friday, October 7, 2022, at 12 midnight ET. This is your FINAL opportunity to contribute to AAHOA's findings and share how your IHG properties were affected by this cyberattack.
Furthermore, USAE News released an article where they interviewed Vimal Patel, one of the most vocal AAHOA Members condemning how IHG has handled the breach. In the article, Patel speaks about how IHG has been anything but supportive, and to his knowledge, no one from IHG gave notice of the breach; he and his staff started receiving complaints from guests that their hotel bookings weren't confirmed.
Each state has its own mini version of the IRS, often referred to as the State Department of Revenue. They are responsible for the administration of more than 7,500+ tax jurisdictions within the U.S.
With many tax rates and changing rules and regulations, staying compliant can be challenging for hotel owners. Leyton has your back.

Truist Securities reports, “Last week’s RevPAR was up against a +75.4% comparable result in 2021 vs. +78.4% in the prior week. On a 3-year run-rate (vs. 2019), RevPAR was +12.9% vs. +13.9% in the prior week’s 3-year run-rate. Upscale RevPAR: +27.0% y/y and +7.5% over 3 years; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +15.7% y/y and +15.1% over 3 years. Given the various timings of the Jewish holidays, we believe the week faced an easy y/y comp. This was most evident in the unusually strong results for the Group segment, up 61.4% y/y. Tampa, which was expected to have greater hurricane impact, had clearly challenged results with occupancy -9% y/y last week versus flattish over the last 28 days and occupancy in the 40s/50s as the storm approached. For results vs. 2019, we see this as a clean comp albeit on a holiday week with lower corporate travel. 2019 comparisons should be more meaningful post-Holidays in two weeks.” For more, read the full report here.
