Laura Lee Blake, AAHOA President and CEO, wrote an opinion piece for HospitalityNet to address the ongoing labor shortage that has been plaguing the hospitality industry.
In the article, Blake discusses the recent issuing of more than 60,000 H-2B temporary foreign worker visas for 2023 in addition to the typical 66,000 H-2B visas typically available each year, and while that may seem like a lot, the number of visas doesn't begin to cover the estimated 1.5 million job openings in the hospitality industry. She points out how important it is for the nearly 20,000 AAHOA Members to fill open positions, especially because the percentage of hotel ownership in the country make them key contributors to local economies.
She also discusses some solutions to remedy the labor shortage, such as implementing new technology that doesn't require in-person labor like contactless check-in kiosks, eliminating caps on the H-2B visas altogether and allow them to be valid for multiple years, and speeding up the process for refugees to obtain work visas.

On the heels of an uninspiring September, many REIT properties entered positive territory in October, based largely on a month of strong performances from hotels.
According to recent data from STR, hotel occupancy fell for a third straight week (ending Nov. 5), but demand remains incredibly high, setting a record for 24,183,556 room nights sold during a week that included Halloween.
The ongoing pandemic-related lockdowns in China are creating headaches for hotel brands based elsewhere, which rely heavily on the Chinese market. As a result, some franchisees are fearful that they'll end up footing the bill for a brand's performance halfway across the globe.
