As Truist Securities wrote, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was -0.4% y/y for the week ending 7/6/2024, per STR, below the prior week's result of +6.9% y/y and below the trailing 10-week average of +2.1%. Last week demand was leisure-led due to July 4th on Thursday (the holiday was on a Tuesday last year). In our review of holiday performance toward the end of the week, we considered the results lethargic though "could have been worse". Performance by chain scale was uneven with Luxury far outperforming Economy/Midscale: the bifurcation of domestic leisure travel behavior today. There was also city-specific impact to the Gulf Coast from the approaching Hurricane Beryl. Upscale RevPAR: -1.6% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: -2.4% y/y”.

AAHOA Mourns the Loss of Past Chair Manhar P. (MP) Rama

What Happened: The AAHOA Community is deeply saddened by the passing of AAHOA Past Chair Manhar P. (MP) Rama on Sunday, July 7, at the age of 74. An icon in the hospitality industry, MP served as AAHOA Chairman from 2005 to 2006. Rama is preceded in death by his brothers, Dinu (D.P.) and Jayanti (J.P.) Rama, AAHOA Past Chairman, who passed away in February of 2022. He is survived by his wife, Surekha; children, Sima and Vinay Rama; brothers, AAHOA Founder Hasmukh P. (HP) Rama and Raman P. (RP) Rama; and sisters, Madhu Vivek, Hansa Deva, Pushpa Lala, and Pravina Thakor.

The Big Picture: MP was a mentor and advocate for young professionals, providing invaluable guidance to many, including AAHOA Chairman Miraj S. Patel. MP's memory and contributions to AAHOA and the hospitality industry will forever be a blessing.

What's Next: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at Faith Assembly in Orlando, FL. Services will be live-streamed at https://faithassembly.org/live.

What Happened: Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Matagorda, TX, on Monday at 4 a.m. CDT. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported ongoing threats of storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and flash and urban flooding.

Here to Help: To assist our members who live in the region, AAHOA has put together a list of resources. Some of these resources apply to all areas of the country as we enter the peak months for hurricanes and tropical storms. Many AAHOA Member-owned hotels are located on or near the path of hurricanes, making preparedness a top priority. We encourage all hoteliers to have a plan in place and to use AAHOA as a resource to protect their families, guests, and properties from the impact of hurricanes.

DeSantis Vetoes Senate Bill 280 Regarding Vacation Rentals

July 5, 2024 -- AAHOA Advocacy in Action

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed Senate Bill 280, which would have held platforms more accountable and ensured that all short-term rentals obtain licenses and pay their fair share of taxes.

Background: AAHOA has actively supported SB 280 throughout the legislative process. This year, AAHOA Members sent over 300 letters to elected officials asking for their support.
Between the Lines: In his veto letter to the Secretary of State, Gov. DeSantis said the bill would create "new bureaucratic red tape" and prevent local regulation.
Bottom Line: While we are disappointed with Gov. DeSantis' veto of the bill, AAHOA will continue to champion a level playing field with short-term rentals (STRs), urging policymakers to implement and enforce uniform and standard regulations that ensure STR parity, data transparency, and a level playing field.

U.S. RevPAR +6.9% y/y Last Week. Big Group Week in Between the Juneteenth and July 4th Holidays

As Truist Securities wrote, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was +6.9% y/y for the week ending 6/29/2024, per STR, above the prior week's result of -2.3% y/y and above the trailing 10-week average of +1.9%. As we expected, last week was positively impacted by strong business travel (Group RevPAR: +26% y/y) as last week was in between two holiday-impacted weeks (Juneteenth the week prior and July 4th this week). Adding to the calendar shift impact is the timing of both holidays being in the middle of the workweek. We anticipate sharply reduced business travel in next week's data set, a net headwind given group is the strongest travel segment today (and leisure is the weakest). Upscale RevPAR: +8.2% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +5.4% y/y.”

Hospitality Women's Innovation Council Reveals Tech Survey Findings

What Happened: The Hospitality Women's Innovation Council, comprising of hotel brand executives and innovators including former AAHOA Women Hoteliers Director Eastern Division Lina Patel (2017-2023), found that only 20% of hotel professionals believe current technology stacks sufficiently support efficiency and guest care.

Key Findings:

Insufficient Tech Stacks: Only 20% of hotel professionals believe current tech stacks (PMS, CRS, RMS, housekeeping, maintenance) are sufficient for efficiency and guest care.
Need for Collaboration: 91% of respondents want better collaboration among technology companies for improved integrations.
Integration Importance: 86% say better integration processes would encourage more tech investments.

AAHOA Weighs in on U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Chevron Doctrine

AAHOA applauds the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision to overturn the 1984 Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. case. This decision will provide for judicial oversight over federal regulatory actions.

The Supreme Court, in overturning the 1984 law, now says that the courts, and not government agencies, are better qualified to make these decisions. "Agencies have no special competence in resolving statutory ambiguities," Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the court's decision. "Courts do."

AAHOA supports the ruling overturning a 1984 decision, informally known as the Chevron doctrine, that directed lower courts to defer to federal agencies when laws passed by Congress are unclear. Many business groups believe administrative agencies have used Chevron to increase their power and uphold onerous regulatory burdens for the last 40 years.

As Truist Securities wrote, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was -2.3% y/y for the week ending 6/22/2024, per STR, below the prior week's result of +0.3% y/y and below the trailing 10-week average of +1.3%. Juneteenth fell on a Wednesday this year versus a Monday last year. Due to the holiday timing, business travel was unsurprisingly light and in particular corporate group. We did not sense that holiday-related events provided a materially positive benefit to Top 25 market demand (something we are monitoring for a relatively new federal holiday although holiday event impact in the midweek is difficult for us to discern at a macro level). Upscale RevPAR: -2.8% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: -3.0% y/y”.

AAHOA Mourns the Loss of Oklahoma City Hotel Owner and Member Hemant Mistry

AAHOA issued the following statement in response to the tragic murder of Hemant Mistry (59), a respected AAHOA Member and veteran hotel owner/operator from Oklahoma City, OK.

What Happened: According to police reports, a 41-year-old suspect was arrested and is now in custody following an altercation on Saturday, June 22, during which he punched Mistry, who passed away on Sunday from the impact. Local sources indicate that Mistry had asked the suspect to leave the property. This incident bears a heartbreaking resemblance to the murder of Pravin R. Patel, owner of the Hillcrest Motel in Sheffield, AL, who was killed under similar circumstances in February.
The Big Picture: AAHOA urges hoteliers to prioritize safety protocols and consider the risks of handling confrontational situations independently. Hotel staff should engage law enforcement when faced with potentially volatile encounters to mitigate risks to personal safety. This recommendation is further underscored by the Surgeon General's recent report on the escalating public health crisis of gun violence, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and professional intervention to prevent the unnecessary loss of innocent lives.

AAHOA Members Advocate on Police Permit Process for Hotels in Los Angeles

June 20, 2024 -- AAHOA Advocacy in Action

Members of the Greater Los Angeles Area Region, under the leadership of Regional Director Naresh (ND) Bhakta, provided testimony to the Los Angeles City Council regarding its police permitting process. The Council was scheduled to vote on delaying the implementation of the police permit application from July 2024 to January 2025. Instead, the motion was moved to the Public Safety and Planning and Land Use Committee for further discussion.

Background: Language impacting the hotel police permit section (Sec.103.400 - 409) was added to the original motion without the hotelier's input late last year. On Nov. 20, 2023, the LA Police Commission released a draft for the hotel permitting process.
Why it Matters: This new language would require hoteliers to submit police permit applications every year to be eligible for business licenses and a five-year penalty for a violation. The new language also lists grounds for permit application denials, including grounds for disciplinary action (e.g., a hotel manager convicted of a felony).

New Action Alert | Block President Biden’s New DOL Overtime Rule

On June 5, Rep. Tim Walberg (MI-05) introduced H.J.Res.166 to block President Biden’s Department of Labor’s (DOL) new Overtime Rule from taking effect. Senator Mike Braun (R-IN) is leading the Senate companion.

Why it Matters: The DOL’s rule, which goes into effect July 1, would expand overtime pay eligibility to roughly 4 million workers by raising the exemption threshold annual salary to $58,656 and updating that rate every three years.
Deeper Dive: Business groups sued the DOL in a federal district court in Texas on May 21 over the Overtime Rule, claiming the department went beyond its authority under theFair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The lawsuit also claimed the rule violated the Administrative Procedure Act (APA).
Small Role, Big Impact: Write your legislator to let them know how DOL’s Overtime Rule will impact you and ask them to support Rep. Walberg & Senator Braun in their efforts to block the rule from taking effect.

The strongest performing hotels continue to be urban full-service with business orientation and markets with strong international inbound demand. We assume some impact from the Juneteenth holiday, which was on the following Monday last year (long weekend) versus the following Wednesday this year. Weekend RevPAR y/y was -5% vs. the prior week of +1%. Upscale RevPAR: +1.2% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: -0.4% y/y.”

Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was +1.0% y/y for the week ending 6/1/2024, per STR, below the prior week's result of +3.9% y/y and below the trailing 10-week average of +2.0%. On a holiday Memorial Day week with relatively light business travel (a relatively heavier leisure week), we are not surprised RevPAR growth was up slightly y/y. We would say Memorial Day weekend performance was not a bust but also a reflection that Americans are seeking value vacations (home or abroad), which is contributing to modest RevPAR growth y/y for summer leisure. Upscale RevPAR: +1.3% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +0.5% y/y”.

Lawsuit Filed Regarding Final 2024 Overtime Rule of the Department of Labor

A lawsuit challenging the Department of Labor’s (DOL) final 2024 Overtime Rule was filed on Wednesday, May 22.

Why is this Important?

On April 23, 2024, the DOL published its final Overtime Rule, which would have increased the salary threshold for overtime pay eligibility from $35,568 to $43,888 on July 1, 2024, and then to $58,656 by January 1, 2025. In addition, starting July 2027, the threshold would be automatically raised every three years.

AAHOA’s Role

AAHOA sent a letter opposing the proposed rule in November 2023 to the Department of Labor Acting Secretary Julie A. Su, illustrating our concerns and the negative impact the rule would have on AAHOA Members.

“AAHOA represents nearly 20,000 members owning more than 60% of all hotels in the United States,” said AAHOA President & CEO Laura Lee Blake. “This 2024 Overtime Rule will undoubtedly have a negative impact on all hoteliers and their operations. We commend the filing of the lawsuit to vacate and set aside the Rule, and enjoin the DOL from implementing it. The DOL was stopped from implementing a similar rule back in 2017. We trust the Court will stop them once again to protect employers across the country.”

We will work to keep AAHOA Members informed as the situation evolves.

AAHOA Welcomes Memorial Day Travel Reports, Looks Forward to Strong Summer

AAHOA welcomes the good news about the record highway and air travel numbers set over Memorial Day weekend and is optimistic about the tone it sets for summer travel.

"With the summer travel season underway, the numbers from Memorial Day weekend travel, considered the kickoff to summer, indicate great things for America's hotel industry during the upcoming summer months," AAHOA Chairman Miraj S. Patel said.

The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) reported a staggering 2.95 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports on Friday, May 24, surpassing a previous record set last year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

In a LinkedIn poll conducted over Memorial Day, AAHOA President & CEO Laura Lee Blake asked users about their preferred hotel amenities. The results were as follows: 76% of respondents indicated "great mattress and pillows" as their top choice, followed by 10% who selected "contactless check-in," and 9% for "electric vehicle charging stations."

Truist Securities reports, “Overall U.S. RevPAR was +2.8% y/y for the week ending 5/18/2024, per STR, below the prior week's result of +6.6% y/y but above the trailing 10-week average of +1.5%. Last week's results reflected a clean comp with continued evidence of strong Group performance (RevPAR +13.2% y/y, split fairly evenly between occupancy and ADR). Conversely, Transient RevPAR was flat. Resort RevPAR on a non-holiday mid-Spring week was -2.8%. Economy was the only chain scale with negative results y/y, also -2.8%. Upscale RevPAR: +3.6% y/y; Upper Midscale RevPAR: +1.6% y/y”.
