The Port of Ensenada became the first ‘Green Port’ in Mexico and the second in Latin America upon receiving its Ecoports PERS (Port Environmental Review System) certification for environmentally sustainable business practices.
The ceremony held on August 29 at Ensenada’s Ventana al Mar Plaza was attended by Mexico’s Secretary of Communications and Transportation, Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, the Governor of Baja California, Francisco Vega de Lamadrid, Mexico’s Ports and Merchant Marine Chief and 2015 AAPA Port Person of the Year, Guillermo Ruiz de Teresa and Port Director Héctor Gonzalo Bautista MejÃa among others. ECO Sustainable Logistics Chain (ECOSLC) Foundation President Herman Journeé delivered the Ecoports PERS certificate and praised the port for taking the lead in their commitment to sustainable operations and development. The Port of Ensenada had previously implemented a variety of environmental programs designed to recycle resources, treat hazardous materials and wastewater, reduce emissions and protect marine flora and fauna. The port also has ISO 9001-2008, ISO 14001-2004 and CPBIP certifications.
Journeé also emphasized the need for all ports to become environmentally friendly in the future due to the ecological impacts of growth in international trade and the increasing tendency of financial institutions to expect such certifications as a prerequisite for granting loans or insuring assets.
The Ecoports PERS certification is endorsed by Lloyd’s Register and administered by the non-profit ECOSLC Foundation under the auspices of the European Commission and ESPO (European Seaports Organization). To obtain the certification, ports must go through a three step process that entails professional training workshops, self-analysis reports that identify weaknesses while setting benchmarks and strategies to ensure future sustainability and implementation of environmental strategy, policy and management systems.
