Port of Brownsville Foreign Trade Zone Continues to Rank High Nationally
The U.S. Foreign Trade Zone Board ranks the Port of Brownsville in 2014 third in the nation out of 179 active U.S. Foreign Trade Zones for the value of goods exported during 2014, and 25th for the value of merchandise imported.
The port is the grantee of Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) No. 62, which consists of sites at the Port of Brownsville, Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport, Harlingen Industrial Park and Airpark, NAFTA Industrial Park and FINSA Industrial Park at Los Indios.
The board’s 76th Annual Report to Congress reported more than $3 billion in various commodities were warehoused and distributed through the Port’s FTZ No. 62. Steel, metals and petroleum products are some of the goods moving through the zone. Merchandise in a foreign trade zone is considered to be outside the U.S. Customs territory, and therefore not subject to duties while in the zone.
"The Port of Brownsville remains a statewide and regional economic driver, as well as an international leader in world trade," said Eduardo A. Campirano, Port of Brownsville Director & CEO. "Our continuous ranking as one of the top three leaders for exports and gaining recognition in the top 25 for imports demonstrates the importance of the Port as vital to Texas’ place in the global marketplace."
